This is a temporary position. After successful completion of the training and earning a Commercial Drivers License (CDL), youll be eligible to apply for a permanent position.

What to expect:

Step 1: Apply for this position and go through the hiring process

Step 2: Attend training classes at a Head Start location and get paid $16.70/Hour to learn

Step 3: Upon successful completion of the CDL exam, apply to be a Head Start Driver!

Permanent employment as a Bus Driver includes:

  • 22 Days of PTO and 14 Paid Holidays in your first year of employment
  • Starting salary of $16.70/Hour Salary increase at 6 months and 12 months (upon successful completion of probationary period).

  • Drivers completing the CDL training must commit to applying and accepting a given offer for the Head Start Bus Driver position or the CDL will be revoked.

Job Summary: Under the supervision of the Transportation Coordinator, this temporary position will train to obtain a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) in the state of Minnesota. After completion of the training, the individual may be eligible to be hired as a full time driver for the Head Start program. The Head Start driver is responsible for transporting children to and from assigned locations, performing daily inspections and minor maintenance requirements, and delivering food and/or supplies, as needed.

Essential Functions(Not All Inclusive):

Duties and Responsibilities while in training:

  • Dependable and reliable daily attendance for training.
  • Complete approximately 60-80 hours of online training with the support of a CDL trainer and under the supervision of the Transportation Coordinator.
  • Complete approximately 20 hours of behind the wheel (BTW) CDL training.
  • After training is completed, go to the testing facility in a school bus at scheduled time and successfully pass the CDL behind the wheel road test.
  • After obtaining a CDL, apply to and accept a given offer for a permanent full time driver at CAPRW Head Start and commit to a minimum of 1 year of employment upon hire. Failure to complete this step will result in forfeiture of the CDL.
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

Education & Experience: High School diploma or GED, valid Class D driver's license

Licensing Requirements: Willingness to complete training within the required timeframe determined by the program coordinator (typically 1-2 months) in order to successfully obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with school bus and passenger endorsement with no passenger restrictions. No major violations and no more than two minor violations in the last five years. Clean driving records are preferred. Must be able to meet other requirements of the Minnesota Motor Vehicle Department (DOT). Because of the multiple locations of centers throughout Ramsey County, reliable transportation on a daily basis is required.

Work Knowledge: Knowledge of St. Paul Metro area preferred and ability to read a street map. Ability to use email as a form of communication. Ability to use a computer to complete an electronic timecard and to complete the online training.

Starting Salary: $16.70/Hour or $17.12/Hour Bilingual
