Job Summary

Minnesota Department of Transportation does not sponsor applicants for work visas or Optional Practical Training Extensions for STEM Students. Individuals must be legally authorized to work in the US at the start of employment.

The purpose of this position is to perform advanced level installation, maintenance, and repair of Roadway Weather Information Systems (RWIS). RWIS systems repairs may include but are not limited to Humidity Sensors, Wind Speed/Direction Sensors, Precipitation sensors, Visibility sensors, Pavement Sensors, routers, switches, mother boards and backplanes. This position will also include vehicle installations of various electronic equipment including two-way radios and Network WAN/LAN as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two-year minimum certification in electronics OR equivalent work experience as described in the bullets below:

  • Knowledge of standard practices and procedures used in the repair, installation, and maintenance of a wide variety of electronic equipment with limited supervision or outside technical direction.

  • Knowledge of fault isolation tools, techniques, and equipment.

  • Knowledge of computer hardware, software, network operating systems, and capabilities sufficient to program and diagnose network equipment.

  • Ability to read and interpret detailed technical information sufficient to carry out electronic installation, maintenance, and repair.

  • Ability to communicate technical issues with peers, supervisors, and electronic vendors.

  • Skills in troubleshooting techniques and handling sensitive electronic equipment and parts as well as a mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity are required.

  • Valid (Class D) drivers license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A completion of two-year vocational/technical program in Electronics Technology (Associate in Applied Science degree or Electronic Technician diploma or ability to attain one within a year of hire.

  • Ability to work on a variety of manufacturers equipment.

Physical Requirements

  • Pre-Employment Physical Exam: A pre-placement physical examination is required for this position. Current employees who have successfully bid or are moving into a different functional work area will be required to complete the pre-employment physical exam for the area they are moving into. The scope of the physical exam will be limited to whether the employee can safely and effectively perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, in compliance with state and federal law.
