Engineering Operations Technician (EOT) Overview:
You will work with engineers, field staff, utility companies, local public agencies, and the public to review permits on the primary road system. You will have the opportunity to broaden and develop your communication, customer service, and organizational skills. When you join the department, you will help people travel safely and efficiently in collaboration with your IDOT teammates.

On a typical day you will be:


  • Reviewing and administering the DOT permit program, including utility, access, work in right of way, advertising signs, and plantings in Woodbury, Plymouth, Cherokee, Buena Vista, Pocahontas and Palo Alto counties.
  • Working with Maintenance supervisors, County and City Engineers, and others to provide a safe and efficient transportation system.
  • Ensuring that public investment in the system infrastructure is protected and preserved.
  • Assisting district staff in Iowa DOT right-of-way management.
  • Reviewing complaints and /or inquiries from outside agencies, legislators, and the public.
  • Visiting project sites.
  • Participating in training opportunities.

The Team
The Iowa Department of Transportation's Highway Division is made up of more than 1,000 employees. These dedicated folks provide the support and services to maintain 114,000 lane miles of roadway with over 4,000 pieces of equipment located in more than 150 facilities statewide. District 3 includes 220 employees within a 19-county area of northwest Iowa. This position assists the District 3 team while reporting to the Assistant District Engineer and working with the District Engineer.

Position Details
Location: This position will report to the nearest district office, resident construction office or maintenance garage in the assigned area of District 3. This position is currently assigned Woodbury, Plymouth, Cherokee, Buena Vista, Pocahontas and Palo Alto counties. The assigned area can change depending on department needs to provide service to the public.

Shift Requirements: Monday Friday, Flex Hours and Teleworking Available

Travel: Occasional travel overnight is possible. Typically, this is for conferences, training, and meetings.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

1) Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associates degree in engineering, construction management, or a related field, and experience equal to two years of full-time work in highway construction, inspection, or surveying.

2) A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in engineering, construction management, or a related field equals one year of full-time experience.

3) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes two years of full-time work as a Construction Technician or Highway Technician Senior.
