Lahontan Audubon Society (LAS) is an independent chapter of the National Audubon Society, dedicated to bird conservation through education, advocacy, and stewardship. As a non-profit organization serving northern Nevada, LAS has been making a positive impact on the local community since 1972. We are currently expanding our reach and aiming to increase participation from diverse backgrounds in our programs. By enhancing our education programs and creating awareness, we are committed to providing improved access to environmental education in northwestern Nevada.

Position Description

As an Education Coordinator VISTA, you will play a crucial role in expanding LAS's environmental education programs, focusing on birds and their habitat, for local students. Your responsibilities will include analyzing and enhancing existing educational programs to align with Nevada State Academic Standards. Additionally, you will develop a comprehensive education program that extends beyond LAS program visits, providing teachers and students with activities that promote environmental education. Building and maintaining relationships with Washoe County schools administration, curriculum development, and conducting workshops and training days for volunteers will also be part of your role. In addition, you will research and apply for funding opportunities to support youth education programs at LAS.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Curriculum Development:
  • Create curriculum aligned with Next Generation Science and Common Core Standards.
  • Comprehensive Education Program:
  • Develop an educational program that encourages students to expand their knowledge beyond LAS's program visits.
  • Program Expansion:
  • Collaborate with the Education Committee to expand and improve existing education programs.
  • Partnership Development:
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with school administrators and teachers.
  • Marketing and Outreach:
  • Create and implement a marketing plan to engage new audiences in LAS's education programs.
  • Volunteer Management:
  • Recruit and train volunteers to teach and implement the updated curriculum.
  • Fundraising:
  • Develop and implement a funding strategy to support educational programs.

Qualifications

  • A strong commitment to Lahontan Audubon Society's mission and vision.
  • A bachelor's degree or relevant experience in education or a science-related field.
  • Demonstrated initiative and a spirit of service.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Experience working with students, teachers, and volunteers.
  • Preferred: A strong understanding of education standards and curriculum development.
  • Preferred: Experience working in formal or informal teaching settings.
  • Preferred: Knowledge of marketing and social media.
  • Competency in reading, writing, and speaking Spanish is a plus.

AmeriCorps VISTA

The Education Coordinator VISTA position is funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service and falls under the AmeriCorps VISTA program. AmeriCorps VISTA is a national service program designed to fight poverty. As an AmeriCorps VISTA member, you will commit to a year-long, full-time (32 hrs/wk) service on a specific project at a nonprofit organization or public agency. Compensation And Benefits

  • Living allowance of approximately $17,600 pre-tax.
