Hours per Week: 40 (non-exempt before DOJ accreditation; exempt once accreditation is attained). Telework Available: Hybrid Starting Hourly Rate: $28.17
Position Description: The Immigration Paralegal is responsible for assisting attorneys in the preparation of family-based and humanitarian cases for submission to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR), and/or the National Visa Center (NVC). S/he will apply for partial accreditation by the Department of Justice (DOJ) as soon as practicable after joining Hogar Immigrant Services Legal, which is a DOJ recognized organization, and be responsible for maintaining his/her own caseload once accreditation is attained.
Position Responsibilities: The Immigration Paralegal is responsible for assisting attorneys in the preparation of family-based and humanitarian cases for submissions to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the Executive Office of Immigration Review and or the National Visa Center. During employment with CCDA, this role will apply for partial accreditation by the Department of Justice as soon as practicable and be responsible for maintaining their own caseload once accreditation is attained. Position Responsibilities until partial accreditation granted by DOJ: Assist attorneys with preparing family-based and/or humanitarian immigration application forms Communicate with clients to assist with drafting of personal statements and collection of other supporting documents and evidence. Serve as interpreter for client interviews. Once the Immigration Paralegal becomes a DOJ Accredited Representative: Conduct consultations independently to determine clients eligibility for immigration benefits Maintain a caseload of affirmative family-based and/or humanitarian immigration cases, coordinating all aspects of clients cases including client communication, relevant research, drafting personal statements, preparing and signing as representative of record on immigration application forms, and advocacy with law enforcement and other agencies Provide public education in the community, collaborating with other agencies Other Duties: Assist with supervision of volunteers and student inters Enlists the help of volunteers Participates with program wide data collection, fundraising, trainings and strategic planning Participates in meetings with immigration legal services community based organizations Participates in day-long weekend group processing workshops Provide referrals as needed Other duties as assigned Willingness to uphold Catholic moral and social teaching in the workplace.
Qualifications & Skills: Eligibility for partial accreditation by the Department of Justice (DOJ), including prior training in and/or experience with immigration law, as well as good moral character Fluency in Spanish (speaking and writing) required Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills Ability to work both independently and collaboratively to manage a substantial workload with deadline pressures Competence in communicating and interacting with others of diverse cultural, geographic, and economic backgrounds in a professional and compassionate manner, including interacting with individuals experiencing substantial levels of emotional, physical, financial, or other hardship Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office 2007 or later Ability to handle and maintain confidential information Regular access to a vehicle required for transportation to and from government agencies and workshop or other community events
Education and Experience: Bachelors degree or equivalent work experience Minimum of one year of experience or training in family-based and/or humanitarian immigration law required; two or more years preferred Advanced knowledge of immigration law and procedure
