EXEMPT RECRUITMENT ANNOUNCEMENT

JOB TITLE: Legislative Assistant to Senator Twina Nobles

SALARY: $45,000 - $80,000 depending on qualifications

LOCATION: Olympia, Washington

SENATE PROFILE

The Washington State Legislature is a bicameral body comprised of the Senate and the House of Representatives. The Legislature meets annually on the second Monday in January in the Capitol Building in Olympia. Regular legislative sessions take place January through March in even-numbered years and January through April in odd-numbered years. Special legislative sessions occur as needed. Permanent staff work year-round supporting the Senate and legislative members. MEMBER PROFILE

Senator Nobles has served the 28th district since 2021. The 28th Legislative District includes the cities of Fircrest, Lakewood, Steilacoom, Dupont, University Place, Tacoma, Anderson Island, Ketron Island, McNeil Island, and Joint Base Lewis McChord. Her legislative priorities focus on issues that concern her constituents, such as housing stabilization, environmental justice, and accessible transportation. She serves as Majority Whip, Vice Chair of the Early Learning & K-12 Education Committee, Vice Chair of the Higher Education & Workforce Development Committee as well as sits on the Transportation Committee and the Behavioral Health and the Behavioral Health Subcommittee.

POSITION PROFILE

Senator Nobless legislative assistant (LA) is a highly motivated self-starter that will help our team provide the highest quality service, representation, and leadership for the people of the 28th Legislative District. The LA will also be the first face people see in the office of Senator Nobles and helps set the tone for all visitors to our office.

The LA reports to Senator Nobles and will help to supervise a session aide and an intern during the legislative session.


POSITION DUTIES

Communication:

  • Serve as a liaison between Senator Nobles and people interacting with the office; exercise independent judgment to determine the appropriate course of action when faced with a communication opportunity.
  • Work with constituents on casework and legislation; conduct research to respond appropriately
  • Facilitate and coordinate communication between the member, legislators, staff, agencies and interested parties in the creation, development, and progression of legislation
  • Identify creative ways for Senator Nobles to communicate with constituents and other interested parties.

  • Research:

  • Track progression of bills through the legislative process, including following up on committee hearings and preparing and maintaining bill files
  • Collect data on issues using a myriad of resources, analyze material and prepare briefs.
  • Identify and monitor district specific issues

  • Public Relations:

  • Assist with community outreach in the district.
  • Represent Senator Nobles at legislative and community events.
  • Support communications team in reviewing and/or drafting articles, newsletters, notes, press releases, speeches, and social media content
  • Coordinate town hall meetings and district events

  • Administration:

  • Manage daily operation of Olympia office
  • Manage the external e-mail, phone, and mail communications and insure everyone who contacts the office receives a timely, individualized, and appropriate response.
  • Manage & maintain senators schedule. Advise senator of all appointments and meetings and provide background material. Arrange travel-related details
  • Maintain and build contact lists
  • Supervise, train, and assist in hiring session personnel and interns
  • Requirements

  • Superior communication skills, both interpersonal and written.
  • Exceptional writing ability, with the skill to communicate Senator Nobless vision in a clear and compelling manner.
  • Strong organizational skills, as well as extraordinary attention to detail.
  • The courage to question conventional wisdom and challenge the status quo when appropriate.
  • The desire to exceed expectations and to run the most efficient, responsive, and fun legislative office in the country.

  • ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • This position works in-person in Olympia during the legislative session. When the Legislature is not in session, in-state remote work is supported, except when needed to be in-person for training or legislative meetings.
  • Long and irregular hours are required during the legislative session, including evening and weekend work. When the Legislature is not in session, flexible schedule options are available.
  • This position is full-time and exempt from civil service.
  • Benefits

    The salary range for this position is $45k -80k, depending on experience and qualifications. The hiring salary, however, will be less than the top of the range.
