Descriptions

  • The MA represents and supports the Department of Pediatrics, Doernbecher Children's Hospital (DCH), Ambulatory Care Services, Oregon Health & Sciences University (OHSU) and its faculty and staff by providing excellent customer service through prompt and professional communication skills, face-to-face customer contact skills, telephone skills and excellent problem solving skills.
  • Previous experience with EKGs and pediatric immunizations. Always performs as a true team player that helps when/where needed.
  • Number of patients seen will be dependent on the practices and patients' needs.
  • The Pediatric Ambulatory Care practices provides age appropriate care to the age groups indicated: Infants (0-1 yr), Toddlers (1-4 yrs), Preschoolers (4-6 yrs), School-age (6-12 yrs), and Adolescents (12-22 yrs) and older, if necessary.
  • Patients: Manages patient flow and room turnover in assigned areas.
  • Assists patients as needed with ambulation or transportation using proer body mechanics.
  • Takes vital signs, including weight/height recording in medical record.
  • Documents appropriate intake information in EPIC as stated by patient.
  • Assists physicians or other staff with set-up and performance of all clinical procedures (including minor procedures and exams).
  • Assembles equipment and prepares trays for minor procedures.
  • Manages in-baskets and anticipates provider needs.
  • Maintains Health Maintenance and panel management.

Medication:

  • Possesses working knowledge of medications and immunizations for administration, administer as directed.

  • Perform Tests: Able to perform CLIA waved lab test to include but not limited to simple lab testing such as urine dip, urine pregnancy, GUIAC, and capillary glucose monitoring. (Demonstrate competence by the end of their orientation period and on an annualized basis).
  • Ability to perform venipuncture on pediatric, adult and geriatric patients. Response:
  • Recognizes emergent situations and treatments (hypoglycemia, as well as CPR).
  • Contacts nurse when appropriate to assist with triage of emergency or abnormal situations.

Additional Duties:

  • Cleans and prepares equipment for sterilization.
  • Maintains inventory of necessary supplies for both patient exam rooms and work areas.
  • Maintains patient education displays in exam rooms and/or waiting rooms.

  • Insurance terminology Cash handling Computer skills Data entry Electronic health record (EHR) Communication Oral and written communication skills Active listening skills Collaborate with providers Practice Specific Duties Correctly identifies patients using two patient identifiers and labeling at workstation. Coordinate flow of clinic by cleaning exam rooms and checking patients in prior to their exam also prepares patient examination rooms prior to the visit to ensure that proper equipment and supplies are set-up for examinations, required procedures, and /or treatments.
  • Administer immunizations following VFC guidelines and standard work for immunization handling. Enters orders for all labs, ancillary testing and procedures into EpicCare and Cadence. Applies problem-solving and negotiation skills in resolving provider and patient concerns and other procedure related problems. Demonstrates knowledge of normal vital signs, general appearance, signs and symptoms of abuse/neglect, activity and mobility.
  • Obtain accurately the patient's vital signs, weight, length or height, head circumference, and chief complaints, home/work number, allergies, screening and documenting pain, and current medicine (doses in mg and dosage schedule).
  • Collects and sends specimens to hospital laboratory; follows guidelines for proper handling of specimens for transport. Demonstrates the ability to respond in the event of a medical emergency, including Basic Life Support and immediate notification of PA/Provider, access of emergency paging system. Demonstrates knowledge of and/or ability to use equipment defined in the Equipment Competency, including: Code Cart, Emergency Masks, One-Way Valve for Basic Life Support, Suction Devices, automatic BP Machine, Gurney, Exam Table, Thermometers, and Portable Oxygen Tanks.
  • Use the ProPaq, Dynamap, scales and stadiometer equipment correctly. Maintain clean, organized and stocked clinic rooms and ensure that all expired supplies are removed from rooms. Order supplies as necessary. Clean used instruments and check for expiration dates. Wipe down scales, blood pressure cuffs, and toys between patient visits and as needed. Assist with procedures as necessary within the scope of practice.
  • Answer clinic phones. Able to multi-task, prioritize and use time-management skills wisely and appropriately. Trains new employees, student interns and other hospital employees including DCH volunteer as designated by manager. Keep work area clean and organized.
  • Follow TACS/KRONOS procedures. Records refrigerator temperatures, check bathroom for urine specimens, send samples to laboratory, via pneumatic tube or transportation. Attend and participate in staff meetings and education activities.
  • Completes required CME and compliance requirements. MA certification received from a nationally recognized and accredited certifying body, upon hire or by the completion of the probationary period or internal job change evaluation period, as appropriate. Currently, these include: o The American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), awarding the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA.)
  • The American Medical Technologists (AMT), awarding the Registered Medical Assistant (RMA.)
  • The National Center for Competency Testing, awarding the National Certified MA (NCMA.) o The National Health Career Association, awarding the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA.)
