Responsible for ensuring proper operation & maintenance of all Observatory equipment; managing students use of the Observatory in faculty-led courses and research: developing and implementing educational outreach to the community; and overseeing student staff.

This is a part time, benefits eligible, salaried position with a hiring range of $30,476 - $38,102 annually.


Core Responsibilities:

  • Manages, schedules, and supervises direct student use of the Mittelman Observatory in support of faculty-supervised class and research projects, work that is carried out mostly at night and is weather-dependent, as well as associated tasks including data reduction and management. This work includes consultation, instruction, and guidance to students on the use of Observatory instrumentation under the direction of faculty-set curricular goals.
  • Maintains and operates the Observatory equipment, including the 24-inch DFM telescope, other rooftop telescopes, and associated imaging and control systems and equipment. Responsible for managing maintenance, repair, and upgrades of these facilities and procurement of equipment in support of their functioning.
  • Sets up and maintains equipment for astronomy labs and demonstrations.
  • Hires, trains, and supervises student assistants to support teaching and outreach at the Mittelman Observatory, including determination of work schedules and assignments.
  • Manages the Observatory budget under the supervision of the Physics Department Chair.
  • Oversees a robust program of community outreach activities, including observing nights for the public and various groups in the campus community.
  • Administers the associated computer systems, both those used to run the telescope and to run specialized astronomy software, along with other Linux workstations in the department.
  • Oversees remote access to the Mittelman telescopes in New Mexico.

Requirements

Position Prerequisites:

  • MS in Physics or Astronomy, or BS in Physics, Astronomy, or a related field, with suitable experience.
  • Skills and knowledge needed to maintain telescopes in current operation at Middlebury.
  • Knowledge of scientific software and system administration, with an emphasis on telescope operation and data analysis.
  • Demonstrated skills in supporting research programs and outreach activities.
  • Effective communicator, working closely and effectively with faculty, staff, and students.


Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

The person in this position must be able to climb stairs and to mount and unmount astronomical equipment. Must be able to support Observatory functions at night. Some evening and weekend hours may be required at critical times in the semester and depending on class schedules.
