Principal Process Controls EngineerJob Description

Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., a Fortune 500 manufacturer of industrial gases, has an immediate opening for the position of Principal Process Controls Engineer in the Process Technologies group of our green Hydrogen Product Line at either our US Headquarters in Allentown, PA, or our office in Houston, TX.

We have enjoyed a long and successful history of complex gas synthesis, separation, purification, liquefaction, and delivery using a variety of technologies, including steam methane reforming, gasification, autothermal reforming, ammonia, CO2 capture, hydrocarbon cryogenic distillation, hydrogen and helium liquefiers, etc. The Process Technology group of the Green Hydrogen Product Line is responsible for selecting the most appropriate technologies, designing the process cycles, and developing preliminary process duties and high-level equipment specifications, P&IDs, and control schemes meeting customer or project requirements. Our work is an important factor contributing to winning bids which eventually lead to executed projects.
The Principal Process Controls Engineer is an expert individual contributor role. The successful candidate will be providing engineering support in the development of proposal activities leading to the successful hand over to Engineering for the execution of projects worldwide, and in product development for the definition of our Green H2 products from concept to detailed engineering. This will include supporting an in-house design team or supporting an external engineering design company, as well as providing support for upgrading/modifying and maintaining existing product and plant assets. Experience in hydrogen production plants, ammonia and cryogenic applications is a strong plus. The successful candidate needs to be comfortable with ambiguity and complexity. Principal Process Controls Engineer


Roles and Responsibilities:

Deliver all objectives safely and achieve 100% compliance with safety requirements.
Develop process controls execution strategies in conjunction with overall project development team during the bid phase.
Produce process controls project scope of hours and cost estimates.
Participate in P&ID development, operability and hazard reviews and define control systems reliability, operability and availability plans as the need arises.
Develop technical risk matrix, support reliability/availability studies, contribute to risk mitigation and project execution plans.
Develop control equipment functional requirement and detailed design specifications including instruments, control valves, analytical equipment, DCS equipment, SIS equipment and other Process Controls deliverables with high quality and within budgeted timeline.
Develop & review control system designs, architecture, programming & integration specifications and plans.
Support SIL assessments and verification activities.
Support product development activities where the goal will be increasing competitiveness by reducing installed capital cost or optimizing the project engineering hours within the Process Controls offers.
Domestic and international travel to other Air Products facilities, customer locations and plant sites is estimated to be up to 10-20% of the time.
Required Skills / Abilities

10 years of applicable work experience.
Experience developing control applications with Siemens PCS7 and Step7.
Experience with other controls platforms will be considered.
Validated experience driving measurable improvements in safety results.
Good solid understanding on SPI (In-tools) is a plus.
Experience in Control and Instrumentation applications.
Must be a strong team player with a willingness to accept responsibility and learn new technical skills.
A work ethic featuring determination, adaptability, and resilience with the ability to lead under pressure, evolving requirements, and conflicting priorities.
Ability to communicate across diverse cultures on complex technical issues.
Detailed oriented with strong follow through and shown ability to prioritize different projects while maintaining focus on contract requirements
Experience in Green Hydrogen, Ammonia and Electrolyzer systems would be beneficial.

In addition, knowledge / skills / experience in any of the following areas will be a strong added advantage:

Knowledge and working experience of various analytical techniques (Gas Chromatography, Mass Spectrometry, Infrared & Ultraviolet Spectroscopy) and Gas Detectors.
Analyzer communication/transmission protocol and networking consideration for interface to Distributed Control Systems (DCS).
Analytical and solving skills in the field of analyzers.
Cyber Security implementation as it relates to Industrial Control Systems.
Education and Licensing Requirements:
