Oakwood School is an independent, non-sectarian, college-preparatory school for students in preschool through twelfth grade. Oakwood is seeking a part-time high school speech and debate coach. This position is for the 2023-24 school year beginning in August 2023.
SUMMARY Oakwood School seeks a qualified and passionate expert to join the Humanities Department at the high school level. This part-time position would include teaching two sections of Speech and Debate. There may also be some weekend commitments to assist/chaperone at tournaments.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Contribute to the missions of the school.
- Promote a learner-centered approach to instruction while encouraging critical engagement with texts and argumentation.
- Collaborate enthusiastically with colleagues.
- Communicate with students, parents, and colleagues in a timely and professional manner.
- Provide adequate guidance and supervision during tournaments, as required.
- Fulfill campus responsibilities including break supervision, crosswalk duty, or other duties as assigned.

Required - Excellent written and verbal communication skills

- Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and commitment to accuracy in all aspects of work
- Ability to maintain absolute confidentiality and the integrity of all aspects of information disseminated within or external to the school community
- Strong interpersonal skills and commitment to being part of a diverse, equitable, and inclusive school community
Useful/Preferred - Familiarity with the different disciplines of competitive speech and debate
- Demonstrated confidence and aptitude with the use of instructional technology
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Required - Content and pedagogical expertise
Useful/Preferred - A bachelors degree in English, history, rhetoric, theater, or related field
- Experience teaching high school students
- Valid teaching credential
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
- Ability to lift items up to 20 pounds and to sit and stand for 2-5 hours per day
COMPENSATION This position has an expected salary range of $14,545 - $22,800.00.
