Part-time Graffiti Art Instructor

Senior Program, Sarah Lawrence Campus

June 18, 2023 - August 5, 2023

We're looking for enthusiastic, creative people to ignite curiosity in students and help create an inclusive, safe, supportive, and joyful campus community.

About Us

EXPLO is a mission-driven, educational non-profit with more than 88,000 student alumni who hail from 90 countries. We offer residential summer programs for students in grades 4 through 12 on three of the most beautiful college campuses on the East Coast of the U.S. We build a collaborative, transdisciplinary learning environment at our programs, where students drive their own learning through exploration.

Our Impact

For many, EXPLO is a life-changing experience. Our students sometimes describe it as the place where they feel like the truest version of themselves. As an organization, we believe learning should be joyful and create experiences with engagement, inclusion, and magic as first principles. Each summer we share these experiences with smart and curious students from all over the world.

The Opportunity

Although most of our course instructors are also residential advisors, this position is for a part-time instructor for our Graffiti Art elective course, teaching one 75-minute course per day. The course will have a maximum of 16 students, and is designed to provide students with opportunities for hands-on, project-based learning. Depending on the candidate, there may be opportunities to run some afternoon art activities, as well.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

Classroom Instructor Responsibilities

    • Prepare for and teach 1 section of Graffiti Art; this course will run during 5 of our 6 program weeks (with new students each week). The course will use EXPLOs project-based and experiential curriculum -- this curriculum will be shared with you as part of pre-summer coaching + training.
    • Work closely with your Instructional Coach throughout the summer, to revise lessons, incorporate feedback from classroom observations, follow up on student performance, and receive training in professional development and teaching skills
    • Provide a safe and effective learning environment for program students by maintaining classroom spaces and materials to appropriate standards

Campus Operations + Student Life

    • Perform operational and programmatic tasks as needed during the hours you are on campus, including, for example, event set-up, responding to emergencies that arise, and other duties that are assigned as part of our residential and day academic program.

About You

Youve got:

  • A thorough understanding of the techniques, styles, and messages of graffiti art, both today and historically, and a desire to share that knowledge with a curious group of students that may include both beginners and experienced photographers
  • Availability from 1:00-3:00 each weekday the program is in session (June 26-August 4), as well as additional availability for training during the week of June 19.

Ideally, youve also got:

  • 2+ years of post-high school experience by the summer
  • Some experience working with middle-school-aged students

Compensation + Benefits

This is a seasonal position that begins in mid-June 2023. Compensation for this part-time role starts at $25 per hour, and lunch is provided.

Other benefits include:

  • Staff-only affinity spaces and other professional support and development opportunities
  • Access to a gym and other exercise equipment and spaces
  • Hands-on orientation and job training
  • Best in the industry staff to student ratios
  • Openness to working with your college or university to support internship or practicum credit for your EXPLO work
