Position Summary:



Dominion Pathology Associates has an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Pathology Grossing Technician.  The successful candidate will be responsible for the examination, dissection and submission of small, uncomplicated human tissue biopsy specimens.  This position requires strict attention to detail.  After your training phase, this position will likely be required to work 1pm - 9:30pm, Monday through Friday.  This is a new position and hours may vary, but will remain in the evening hours.



 



Duties and Responsibilities:




  • Ensure appropriate accessioning and labeling of specimens, to include proper patient identification.

  • Describe the gross anatomic features of tissue biopsy specimens, including color, measurement, shape and texture.

  • Dissect tissues following established policies and procedures.

  • Interact with other members of the healthcare team, including physicians, PAs, and nurses.

  • Identify any problems that may arise with the handling and processing of human tissue samples and notify supervisor if necessary.

  • Ensure all safety, quality control and quality assurance standards are met.

  • Ensure compliance with all local, federal, CLIA and CAP regulations.

  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.

  • Assist with any and all other duties as assigned.     



           



Minimum Qualifications:



Associate’s Degree in a science related field, including a minimum of 60 semester hours of course work.  At least 24 hours of coursework must be in biology, chemistry or medical laboratory technology.  Must possess excellent communication skills and the ability and desire to work independently. 



 



Preferred Qualifications:



Bachelor’s Degree in a science related field.  Coursework in Medical Terminology and Anatomy and Physiology are desired.  Must possess excellent communication skills and the ability and desire to work independently.



 



Physical and Mental Requirements:




  • Must have excellent dexterity and hand-eye coordination.

  • Position requires extended periods of sitting or standing.

  • Work environment will expose you to potentially harmful chemicals (formaldehyde and xylene) and blood-borne pathogens.

  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds.
