Partner with the head coach and assistant coach in the management and operation of all on hill aspects of the program. Provide on hill support and preparation for Middlebury College Ski Team and other respective groups or teams that use the Middlebury College Snow Bowl for training and or race opportunities. Generate revenue for the snow bowl from ticket sales and lane fees through use of race trails by academies, clubs, teams, camps and other groups.

This is a full time 10 month term role. It is a benefits eligible, salaried position with a hiring range of $31,775 - $40,354 per duration of term. This position has an end date of August 1st, 2024.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Maintain training and race venues at the Snowbowl including but not limited to adequate snow conditions and grooming in conjunction with mtn management and alpine team coaches.
  • Maintain training and race venues with fencing appropriately staged, installed and stored as needed throughout the year.
  • Actively promote the use of the snow bowl for training for academies, clubs, camps and other groups. Organize, schedule and track training sessions by groups other than the college team. Including recording date of training, team information, number of athletes, number of coaches, number of tickets purchased and number of lanes purchased. Keep running tally with a spreadsheet on revenue. Work with college coaches and mtn management when scheduling teams.
  • Be able to provide assistance at the start of races and training for athletes and be knowledgeable in the use of overlays and other ski preparation techniques for race day.
  • Ability or willingness to learn to coach the technical and tactical aspects of the sport in practices and competitions.
  • Work with the coaches to prepare daily practice.
  • Learn the timing and race arena set up so as to be able to assist a timing contractor and eventually have competency to time races themselves (at the snow bowl)

Requirements

Position Prerequisites:

  • (3-5 years experience skiing, teaching skiing and/or coaching skiing. Experience managing events and setting up and maintaining ski training and race arenas is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of constituents through strong interpersonal skills, both written and oral.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and knowledge of issues of diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Excels in organizational skills, computer skills, and able to prioritize multiple tasks with attention to detail.
  • Works effectively within a diverse department and team as well as independently.
  • Must maintain appropriate certifications in CPR/AED/First Aid and must complete the annual NCAA Division III Rules Test.
  • Must hold and maintain a valid drivers license and if requested a college vehicle license.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

  • Long and irregular hours, including early morning, nights and weekends.
  • Ability to be available for training sessions at night under the lights at the Snow Bowl.
  • Long hours in practice and competitions in the cold on the mountain, coaching and setting courses.
  • Some travel for training sessions and competitions in variable winter driving conditions.
  • Carrying heavy loads while skiing, including gates, tools, safety equipment and athlete equipment.
  • Ability to respond to on-hill accidents before ski patrol arrives.
  • Safe and proper use of snowmobiles and other mountain equipment
  • Ability to set, maintain, and remove/roll/store safety netting for use during all training/racing sessions as per USSA Safety Guidelines.
  • Ability to safely use ( or learn to use) equipment tuning machinery and have vast knowledge of the use of race wax and overlays
