Job Duties

$7,500 Sign-on bonus or up to $10,000 student loan repayment may be available for eligible new hires

Provides nursing care within adult institutions by utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating institutional patients per the standards of practice.

Standard of care is achieved through a multitude of services to include 24-hour nursing care, telemedicine, chronic care clinics, sick call screenings/triage, medication administration, patient education, and basic life supporting/emergency care.

Documents all pertinent information into the health record while practicing confidentiality and interfacing with other departments on an as-needed basis.

Registered Nurses possess the ability to delegate tasks and work load and work hours, days, and locations as assigned.

Registered Nurses are capable and available to provide coverage as needed to meet institutional needs. To provide evidence-based nursing care and promote continued competence through education/certification with a focus on correctional nursing.

Minimum Qualifications

Must possess and maintain a valid unrestricted Virginia RN license issued by the board of nursing or a multi-state compact license (if you are a recent graduate of a nursing program in VA and not licensed, the NCLEX-RN exam must be scheduled at the time of application)

Certified Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers with current certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is required upon hire

Working knowledge of evidence-based principles and practices of professional nursing and skills to perform assessment

Demonstrated ability to make competent decisions, perform physical examinations, develop care plans, document provided services, and carry out prescribed orders

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, in accordance with dialogic practices

Demonstrated ability to implement nursing guidelines, utilize established nursing evaluation tools, and evaluate patients

Knowledge of medication use, actions and side effects

Ability to utilize communication in the chain of command effectively and in a timely manner

Working knowledge of mental health illnesses

Working knowledge of withdrawal symptoms and medication-assisted treatment

Medication management and pharmacological knowledge

Experience working in a VADOC medical corrections setting
