The University of Iowa Libraries seeks to hire an organized, communicative, and focused archivist to serve as Collections Archivist for Special Collections. Under the general direction of the Processing Coordinator Archivist, the Collections Archivist is responsible for the accessioning and processing of archival collections representing a wide variety of formats, including paper, audiovisual, and born digital, within Special Collections & Archives. They will address discrete collections of material according to departmental priorities and available resources at the direction of the Processing Coordinator Archivist. They will accession collections, create processing plans, implement processing plans created by themselves or others, process collections, rehouse material, and train student workers associated with projects. They will also collaborate with colleagues within and outside of the Special Collections & Archives department toward larger project goals such as the establishment of workflows and policies for incoming materials, working in tandem with other departmental staff.


Specific duties and responsibilities include:

  • Accession, arrange and describe collections in all formats according to archival standards.
  • Create DACS compliant finding aids using the content management software ArchivesSpace.
  • Collaborate with departmental leadership and staff to identify potential projects, implement processing plans, and create relevant reports for donors.
  • Meet with archival donors, in collaboration with curators and other processing staff.
  • Train and oversee students in processing and related activities.
  • Contribute as appropriate to the development of grant narratives, work plans, and budgets.
  • Participate in the Special Collections & Archives Processing Group, actively engaging in projects such as creating a unified Processing Manual, updating training methods across repositories, and implementing workflows for born digital material.
  • Collaborate with other processing staff to create sustainable, effective processing workflows while integrating these efforts into overall departmental processing needs.
  • With other processing staff, coordinate shelving decisions and shifting projects to maximize shelf space.
  • Keep abreast of developments in archival standards and trends, applying new rules, interpretations, and techniques as appropriate.
  • Contribute to the profession through service, research, publishing, and/or teaching and to the University community through participation in relevant library and University committees.
  • Actively support the University of Iowa Libraries commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion (DEAI) in the workplace.
  • Additional job duties as assigned based on individual knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Required Qualifications

  • A library science graduate degree from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent international degree; or in archival studies; or in a related field with a focus on archival studies.
  • Training in, or demonstrated knowledge of, archival theory and practice.
  • Experience arranging and describing archival collections.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of national metadata content and structure standards for archival materials, such as DACS and EAD.
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team-based setting where consultation, flexibility, reliability, initiative, creativity, collaboration, and cooperation are essential.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion in an academic environment, workplace setting, and/or in the community.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with ArchivesSpace or similar archival collection management systems.
  • Experience interacting with donors of archival material.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of metadata and description resources, such as Library of Congress Subject Headings, AAT: Art & Architecture Thesaurus, the Homosaurus, Metadata Best Practices for Trans and Gender Diverse Resources, and Anti-Racist Description Resources (Archives for Black Lives in Philadelphia Anti-Racist Description Working Group).

The hiring salary range for this Specialist Librarian position is $52,500 - $64,000.


Successful candidates will be required to self-disclose any conviction history and will be subject to a criminal background check and credential/education verification. Up to 5 professional references will be requested at a later step in the recruitment process.


This position is eligible for hybrid work within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.
