Duties

VA Careers - Pharmacy: (link removed)

The major duties are: Provide pharmacy services to all areas served by inpatient pharmacy at the Southern Arizona Veterans Affairs Health Care System (SAVAHCS) including the inpatient care areas and clinic locations. Specific requirements include proficiency in the use of all pharmacy automation, the Electronic Medical Record (EMR), Microsoft Outlook, pneumatic tube system, barcoding procedures, inspection processes, and sterile compounding procedures. This technician works independently under the direct supervision of the Inpatient Pharmacy Technician Supervisor, Inpatient Pharmacist Supervisor and the Inpatient Pharmacy Program Manager. The inpatient pharmacy technician schedule includes rotating tours as necessary to meet the needs of the twenty-four-hour inpatient Pharmacy Service

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 12/27/2023.
Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Proficient in spoken and written English. Note: To be appointed under authority of 38 U.S.C., Chapter 73 or 74, to serve in a direct patient-care capacity in Veterans Health Administration (VHA), applicants must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Education/Experience: high school diploma or equivalent or least 3 months experience in Pharmacy.
  • Grade Determinations: must also have One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-5, directly related to this position, which has equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA) to successfully perform the assigned duties. Experience would include proficient in include; proficient utilization of all pharmacy automation (AcuDose, Robot, MedCarousel, MedShelf, Pacmed, PakPlus, Kit Check, Overwrap packager and OmniCell), the pneumatic tube system, VistA, Microsoft Outlook, compounding procedures, barcoding procedures, and inspection process.
  • Certification: PTCB certification is required.
  • KSA:
1. Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action.
2. Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment.
3. Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents.
4. Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products.
5. Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts.
6. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-6.

Physical Requirements:
Routinely involved in walking, bending, stooping, lifting and handling items not to exceed 50 lbs. Includes prolonged periods of standing and irregular work shifts.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
