Overview of Watson Institute

Watson Institute is a place where rising entrepreneurs and leaders can find their community, discover their calling, and accelerate their careers.

Watson Institute powers Fellowships for partners including Ford Motor Company Fund, Comcast, Google, Western Union Foundation, Truist Foundation, BMO, and several private foundations. Watson Institutes programs will positively impact approximately 2,400 rising leaders this year.

Alumni of Watson Institutes Fellowships have raised over $185 million, created over 1,900 paid jobs, and impacted 10 million people around the world through initiatives they help lead. 90% of Watson Institute alums are employed, continuing their education, or building a venture. This is on par with leading business schools, yet all of the Fellowships Watson Institute powers are free. 99% of Watson Institute Alumni use a skill they learned while in a Watson Institute powered program up to 10 years later. Watson Institutes Alumni have been selected to Y Combinator, the Echoing Green Fellowship and seven have been named to Forbes 30 under 30 lists. Alums continue their education at Harvard University, New York University, and Princeton University, among others.

Programs Manager, Career Accelerator Mission Statement

The mission of the Programs Manager is to manage and lead core elements of the Watson Institute Career Accelerator program and to support ongoing recruitment efforts. The Programs Manager supports Fellows along their 6-10 month Fellowship journey to enhance their skill sets, succeed in their role, and launch long-term successful careers.

The Programs Manager will also support the talent identification, development, and retention goals of our corporate partners. Some of the key elements of this role include: Recruitment (30% of their time), Program Planning & Implementation (35% of their time), and Career Navigating, Coaching, & Communications (35% of their time).

Detailed Position Breakdown:

Recruitment (30%)

Watson Institutes network of over 350 nominators are the primary way in which strong prospective applicants find out about Watson Institute. This individual will lead the process of strengthening and building local relationships with new and existing nominators to help establish awareness of our program and build pipelines, as needed. This part of the role will vary throughout the year based on recruitment needs. The elements of the nominator process include:

  • Identifying strong prospective local nominators: Through research and recommendations from current nominators, the Programs Manager identifies strong prospective nominators.
  • Building new nominator partnerships: Once strong prospects are identified, the Programs Manager leads the process of setting up calls and meetings to bring on board new nominators.
  • Strengthening existing nominator partnerships: Through research and learning conversations, the Programs Manager identifies and implements a strategy to better engage and build a community for our existing nominators.

Program Planning & Implementation (35%)

The Programs Manager is responsible for the implementation of Watson Institutes Career Accelerator program. These duties include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for leading and implementing the 6 to 10 month Career Accelerator.
  • Build out a Fellowship Success Tracker provided to them by the Design team as a guide for the structure of each Fellowship.
  • Responsible for leading a multi-day Immersive experience, either in person or virtually depending on the Fellowship with the support of the Programs Operations Team.
  • Programs Managers are responsible for scheduling the core programmatic elements of each Fellowship, in a way that directly corresponds to the theme of that Fellowship and the profiles of the Fellows admitted.

Career Navigating, Coaching, & Communications (35%)

  • The Programs Manager will be responsible for all Fellow communications beginning as soon as the Fellows have been admitted to the program. They will be responsible for hosting consultation calls, conducting on-going communications leading up to the official start of the Fellowship, and being the main point of contact throughout the Fellowship until the Fellows have officially completed the program.
  • Lead each Fellowship with empathy, perception, and remain committed to the growth of each Fellow by leading weekly or bi-weekly Career Coaching sessions with the Fellows throughout the duration of the program.

  • Demonstrated experience in career coaching or serving as a mentor. Must have a natural ability to inspire and draw out the best when mentoring, coaching, and guiding individuals through their career.
  • Excellent interpersonal, time management, and verbal and written communication skills.
  • Dedication to quality programming by committing to ongoing programmatic refinements based on the Fellow journey and feedback.
  • Bonus: Previous experience working in a collaborative team environment.
  • 2+ years of workforce development training, registered apprenticeship programs, or related Career Accelerator experience, specifically in underserved communities in order to understand the Fellows trajectories and challenges.

  • Competitive base salary according to experience: $60,000.00-$75,000.00.
