Duties

Administrative Program Duties:

  • This SPC's designation of REACH VET Coordinator manages the day-to-day operations and oversight within the facility for the REACH VET program, a sub-specialty component of the Suicide Prevention Program.
  • Serve as a facility Subject Matter Expert (SME) and Point of Contact (POC) for matters related to suicide, including prevention, intervention, postvention efforts, education and outreach, and suicide behavior and death reporting; collaborating with the SPCs and VA at-large to share best practices through multiple touch points.
  • Implement facility suicide prevention strategies in accordance with VHA policies.
  • Monitor the High Risk Mental Health No-Show Reminder, to ensure this tool is operational, transfer the data to the Suicide Prevention Sharepoint site, and communicate with all Suicide Prevention Team members daily.
  • Represent the Psychiatry and Mental Health Service on behalf of Suicide Prevention for internal, or external workgroups, meetings or events as assigned; including support of community outreach events and education - including representation and public speaking on behalf of the VA's Suicide Prevention efforts, as an expert in this area.
Case Management:
  • Initiate contact with veteran to discuss program involvement and expectations.
  • Assist with the completion and utilization of a Suicide Prevention Safety Plan, and reinforce, review and revise with the veteran, as needed.
  • Collaborate with the MHTC and clinical treatment teams.
  • Schedule and monitor appointments as needed
  • Advocate on behalf of a veteran for beneficial services
  • Supportive counseling in-person or via phone.
Prevention:
  • Participates in daily meetings with the other members of the Suicide Prevention Team to clinically review veteran cases that have been referred to the Suicide Prevention Team via Suicide Behavior and Overdose Report (SBOR), the behavior section of the Comprehensive Suicide Risk Evaluation (CSRE), Veteran Crisis Line (VCL), staff referral, veteran self-referral or other communication methods.
Crisis Intervention:
  • Involved in a rotation of Suicide Prevention Team pager coverage, during regular business hours, to ensure warm handoffs and timely intervention for veterans voicing emotional distress in non-clinical areas.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education: Must have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
  • Licensure: Person's hired or reassigned to social worker positions must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level.
Grade Determinations:
  • Experience and Education: One year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills and judgment, demonstrating progressively more professional competency. Candidate may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience. In addition must be able to demonstrate all of the following KSAs:
    • Knowledge of program coordination and administration which includes consultation, negotiation, and monitoring.
    • Knowledge and ability to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines for the program.
    • Ability to supervise multidisciplinary staff assigned to the program.
    • Skill in organizing work, setting priorities, meeting multiple deadlines, and evaluating assigned program area(s).
    • Ability to provide training, orientation, and guidance within clinical practice.

Preferred Experience: Public Health and Public Speaking experience.

Physical Requirements: The position may require occasional travel and driving a government vehicle. The position requires periods of walking, standing sitting and bending.
