Research Associate, Microbiology

 



Job Scope & Purpose:

Primary Job Responsibilities:




  • Help create, curate, and maintain fungal strain collection

  • Organize frozen vegetative mycelium vials (FVMs)

  • Prepare and autoclave media to be used for growing strains

  • Perform experiments comparing the effects of various media on fungal growth and metabolite production

  • Meticulously catalog and track strain information and historical data in Excel tables and databases

  • Help establish a high throughput capability for purification and long term viable storage of diverse filamentous fungal strains

  • Collaborate with colleagues from the Genomics team to acquire, characterize, and preserve fungal strains of interest from a variety of sources

  • Collaborate with colleagues from the Synthetic Biology team to provide pure cultures of fungal strains for genetic manipulation

  • Collaborate with the Natural Products Chemistry team to provide small and large scale fermentation broths as needed



Primary Job Requirements:




  • B.S. in biology, microbiology, mycology, or related field

  • Experience handling microorganisms with emphasis on filamentous fungi

  • Experience preparing media and ability to use liquid dispensers and autoclaves

  • Working knowledge of -80C freezers, centrifuges, shaker incubators, autoclaves, and biosafety cabinets

  • Demonstration of good sterile technique and ability to handle a large number of strains daily

  • Experience with streaking for isolates, dissecting and light microscopes

  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task during daily routine

  • A desire to be in a laboratory setting, being involved in the design and downstream generation of scientific data
