Academy for Young Minds (AYM) is seeking an experienced Nurse to join our team and work in our brand new, state-of- the-art private school in Long Island City, NY. Classroom ratios are 8:1:2. This is a full-time, 12-month position.

Overview

School Nurse will effectively provide health services for students and act as an advocate, liaison and consultant on health-related issues for staff, students and families.

Desired Qualifications and Skills

  • NYS RN licensure required
  • At least two years of nursing experience
  • Understanding of the needs of students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and/or other developmental disabilities and their families
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational and problem solving skills; good documentation skills
  • Computer proficiency (e.g., data base, word processing, etc.)

Responsibilities

  • Provide health services in a prompt, clinically proficient and professional manner, pursuant to NYC DOH/DOE policies and procedures to provide direct healthcare services to healthy students as well as those with chronic health conditions, including but not limited to asthma, ADD/ADHD, diabetes, allergies, and seizure disorders, including prescribed routine nursing procedures ( including but not limited to all types of medications, assessing vital signs, monitoring blood glucose, insulin calculation and injection with insulin pen or pump, utilizing epi-pen and nebulizer, and performing all types of catheterizations, G-tube feedings, tracheostomy care and suctioning).
  • Documentation of medication administration
  • Collection of medically appropriate documentation physicals, prescriptions, allergy alert plans, etc.
  • Maintain School-wide Special Alerts Form updated at all times
  • Keep nurses office appropriately stocked with student medication in locked refrigerator and other supplies
  • Ensure that each classroom and locations of the school building are equipped with a bag of Basic First Aid Kit at all times
  • Collaborate with school team and parents on health related issues
  • Participate in team meetings and professional development activities
  • Member of crisis intervention team
  • Demonstrate professionalism while adhering to the mission, vision and philosophy of AYM.

FYI: This is what I had included in AYM Emergency Response Plan (ERP) protocols:
Responsibilities include:

  • Monitor and maintain Automated External Defibrillator (AED) device on campus
  • Provide CPR and Emergency Kit to site
  • Administer first aid or emergency treatment as needed
  • Supervise administration of first aid by those trained to provide it
  • Organize first aid and medical supplies
  • Maintain inventory in the Emergency Kit
  • Ensure that each classroom and locations of the school building are equipped with a bag of Basic First Aid Kit at all times
  • In the event of extreme medical emergencies (e.g., no pulse, choking, not breathing, massive bleeding, head injury, severe allergic reaction, etc.), notify Head of School immediately, implement the AYM ERP, and secure the emergency site if injuries have occurred
  • Execute assignments as directed by the Head of School/Incident Commander
  • Maintain School-wide Special Alerts Form updated at all times
  • Carry the AYM ERP BLUE BAG during drills and in the event of an emergency
  • Keep the AYM ERP BLUE BAG updated at all times including:
    • AYM ERP
    • Red Folder
      • School Roster
      • School Medical Log
      • School-wide Students Special Alerts Form
      • AYM Important Emergency Contact List
      • Parents/Guardians Emergency Contact List
      • Staff Emergency Contact List
    • Colored Cards (i.e., Green, Yellow, and Red)
    • First Aid Kit and Emergency Supplies (i.e., marker pen, flashlight, and whistle)

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years experience as a licensed practical nurse LPN
  • Experience in pediatrics and/or public health nursing
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred
  • Currently licensed by the State of New York; and CPR/First Aid Certificate/BLS


Working Conditions:

Monday - Friday

Occasional before and after school work hours as needed
