The Elevator Pitch

Do you enjoy leading a team through a project to success? Are you skilled in supporting the early concept development of projects and participating in early testing/evaluation efforts?

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will lead the mechanical development effort of a project and release it to full-scale manufacturing and production with our contract manufacturer. You will support early concept development with an outside consulting firm. You will be a key part in designing, building, and testing prototypes in the field.

Success in the Role: What are performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?


In the first 30 days, you will:

  • Become an integral team member and get up to speed on who's who in Engineering, Technical Support, and Field Service
  • Learn how Express works from top to bottom
  • Get setup with Solidworks, PDM (Product Database Management), and Arena PLM (Product Lifecycle Management)
  • Receive an introduction to our prototype machine shop

Within 3 months, you will:

  • Contribute to the design and development of early prototypes for a new development program
  • Use Solidworks to make parts, assemblies, and drawings
  • Help build and test early-stage prototypes; procure parts or build in-house
  • Create preliminary bills of materials and component specifications using Arena PLM

By the end of the first year, you will:

  • Be a confident leader of the mechanical development effort for a specific project
  • Have completed successful field trials and demonstrate proof of concept and performance testing
  • Lead the design effort for final product configuration
  • Work on plastic component design and DFM (Design for Manufacturing)
  • Create detailed documentation to support full-scale manufacturing

The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

  • Develop innovative mechanical design concepts using Solidworks
  • Propose solutions to mechanical design challenges and present options to the team
  • Hands-on building of prototypes
  • Use our prototype machine shop to build parts with 3D printers, CNC milling machine, CNC
    router and external rapid prototyping services
  • Evaluate prototypes and problem-solve
  • Test these prototypes in the lab environment with other team members
  • Participate in field trials in the real-world environments
  • Design for manufacturing with plastic components
  • Work with the industrial designer and product team to determine the final look and feel of the product
  • Create exterior skin panels from plastic and work with vendors to make the parts for
    production

  • You will be joining the Mechanical Engineering team and report to the VP of Mechanical Engineering.

Where is the role located?

  • The location of this role is based out of our HQ in Waltham, MA with some flexibility in being remote some days.
