Student Mentor - Hamilton Virtual School

Summary:

In this crucial role, you will play a vital role in supporting students enrolled in online learning programs. You will provide individualized guidance, monitor progress, and ensure students have access to the resources and support they need to thrive. Reports to: Virtual School Principal


Duties and Responsibilities:

As an Online Learning Mentor, you will be responsible for:

  • Conducting and documenting weekly two-way communication with students (sometimes face to face) to ensure their understanding of course material, address any concerns, and provide encouragement and support.
  • Navigating various online courses used by the district, including Canvas, Michigan Virtual, Edmentum, Edgenuity, Calvert, Buzz, etc., to answer student questions and troubleshoot technical issues.
  • Documenting attendance and student progress accurately and consistently.
  • Ensuring pupils have access to appropriate technology by troubleshooting technical issues and working with district personnel to resolve any hardware or software problems.
  • Facilitating access to district teachers of record for courses by communicating student needs and concerns and coordinating communication between students and teachers.
  • Managing crucial student count day communications, compliance, and documentation to ensure accurate data reporting.
  • Assisting with record keeping, including maintaining student files and updating information as needed.
  • Verifying student schedules to ensure they are enrolled in the correct courses and taking classes aligned with their academic goals.
  • Providing troubleshooting assistance for online students who experience technical difficulties or need help navigating online learning platforms.
  • Monitoring student attendance and progress and collaborating with students and parents to develop plans to get back on track if they are falling behind.
  • Completing the Canvas Mentoring class and ongoing professional development opportunities to stay up-to-date on best practices in online learning and mentoring.
  • Assuming other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must have a college degree; OR
  • Completed 60 college credit hours; OR
  • Achieve a passing score on one of the following MDE-approved formal state academic assessments:
    • MTTC Basic Skills
    • ETS - 460
    • WorkKeys - Minimum scores of Reading for Information (4); Applied Math (4); Writing (3)
    • SAT - at least 480 on evident-based reading and writing and 530 on math
    • ACT (between 1/1/1989 - 10/1/2017) - minimum scores of Reading (22); Combined English and Writing (22); Math (22)
    • MME (between 1/1/2007 -1/31/2015) - minimum scores of Reading (1108); Writing (1129); Math (1116)

Preferred Qualifications: Previous work experience with K-12 students


Hours:
Currently 30 hours/week, On site Tuesday and Thursday 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM and Wednesday 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM when school is in session. The position schedule will follow the Hamilton Community Schools school calendar.


Start Date
: ASAP

Rate of Pay: $12.50 / hour (base)
