The successful candidate will be responsible for the research and determination of sales, use, gross receipts and personal property tax implications when entering new states, jurisdictions or territories and for timely preparation and completion of related tax compliance for multiple entities. This includes the review of tax returns using Avalara sales& use tax software, PTMS property tax software, and tax work papers within Sales Force/Financial Force to ensure accurate tax compliance in a heavy transaction-based compliance environment. Additional responsibilities include reconciliations of general ledger tax accounts, involvement in tax audits and various research projects.The successful candidate should be adaptable to constant change and thrive in such an environment.



JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

• Proactively research, assess, and communicate relevant tax implications prior to Sunnova entering a new state or territory; required documentation, exemptions, resale certificates, required forms, tax rates, etc.


• Communicate with and resolve as appropriate tax notices with state and local taxing authorities in a timely manner – requesting opinions when necessary


• Document issues and research conclusions in tax memos based on findings


• Coordinate with IT and Billing to determine and set up tax items, tax codes and tax rules in various accounting systems


• Review sales tax returns generated using Avalara and ensure the transactions tie to supporting work papers


• Review personal property tax returns generated using PTMS and ensure the renditions tie to supporting work papers


• Timely analyze, process, and review tax compliance from transaction al systems


• Reconcile sales tax payable account and process journal entries


• Maintain tax records (state registrations, tax permits, licenses, etc.)


• Prepare annual budgets for indirect taxes and explain variations in those amounts from the prior year and current year actuals


• Process tax invoices for payments


• Support tax and financial statement audits


• Assist in the research, analyses and documentation of various income tax matters

• Bachelor’s degree required


• CPA preferred (or actively pursuing)


• Master’s degree in accounting or taxation preferred


• 2+ years of indirect tax experience required (industry or public accounting)


• Hands-on experience with PTMS or Avalara would be highly desirable


• Strong experience and proficiency in Excel


• Proven use of analytical skills and ability to analyze and interpret large quantities of data


• Positive, self-motivated and can-do personality – growth mindset preferred


• Salesforce or other enterprise accounting software experience preferred


• Proficient in Avalara, Vertex or similar sales tax system


• Very strong organizational and communication (verbal and written) skills


• Ability to manage multiple projects while working under pressure and time constraints
