Position Summary:

The Northern Light is UAAs student-run newspaper, funded by student media fees and advertising revenue. The Northern Light explains issues that affect UAA while providing balanced coverage in representing students, staff, faculty and the greater community. The Northern Light serves as a source of news, information, entertainment and offers a platform for discourse. The paper publishes stories online and in print. Copies of the printed edition of The Northern Light are distributed throughout the UAA campus and the Anchorage community. Distribution is about 1,500 copies. Reporters are responsible for writing two 500 - 1000 word stories each week. The stories should pertain to UAA and will likely fall into one of the following sections: news, arts and entertainment, features or opinion. They are expected to cover all sections as needed.
Reporters find interesting and newsworthy stories that lend themselves well to written storytelling. They research, conduct interviews, attend events and collect first hand experiences to be used in their reporting. Also, they collect photos and/or create graphics to be used with publishing.
Stories can appear on The Northern Light website and in the printed edition. Reporters work with other staff on the paper to prepare, develop and repackage content for use in other mediums.
Reporters work under the managing editor. Reporters are responsible for following the The Northern Light editing process, which includes following the Associated Press style. They are responsible for completing edits, submitting drafts and final projects by deadlines and are
expected to attend pitch meetings to discuss stories. They work with other reporters and the managing editor to assist with stories.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Possess excellent verbal and written skills.
  • Ability to write and edit publishable articles or columns with attention to grammar, The
Associated Press style, spelling, clarity, accuracy and thorough reporting.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to prepare, develop, and/or repackage features content for use in other media.
  • Possess familiarity with word processors, Google Drive, Windows and Macintosh
computers.
  • Ability to present news in a balanced and unbiased way.

Preferred knowledge/skills/abilities:
  • Familiarity with preparation and development of other media, such as audio, video and
photography.
  • College level courses in journalism and public communications.
  • Experience working on a publication.
  • Possess knowledge of copyright law, the First Amendment, the Freedom of Information Act
and media ethics.

Minimum Qualifications:

To be eligible for student employment, an applicant must:
a. Be enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment; or
b. Have been enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters; and
c. Have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA), be in good academic standing, or have approval from the MAU Senior Student Services officer or his/her designee.
d. Students enrolled in non-traditional programs of study will be considered eligible for student employment with the approval of the Senior Student Services officer.
e. An applicant must provide evidence of enrollment as outlined above to substantiate employment eligibility.

Position Details:

This is a part-time, up to 20 hours a week, student position paying $11.34/hour.
