Job Summary:

Under the supervision of the Center Education Coordinator, this position is responsible for providing comprehensive educational services in compliance with program guidelines, policies and procedures for children who have a diagnosed mental health concern and/or special education need. The Therapeutic Classroom Teacher is responsible for integrating the early childhood curriculum into the classroom by creating lesson plans, and developing and implementing individual learning plans to meet the needs of every child, including observing, assessing, and documenting each childs progress. The Therapeutic Classroom Teacher works in collaboration with Fraser Mental Health Practitioners and/or Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) Teachers to support each childs developmental, social emotional and behavioral needs. The Therapeutic Classroom Teacher will be an active participant in planning for the education needs of the children and must know and understand each childs diagnosis and needs. Also responsible for maintaining active supervision of children, and providing ongoing communication with parents, including home visits, parent conferences and other events.

Essential Functions (Not All Inclusive):

Provide comprehensive services for children diagnosed with special education needs and/or mental health concerns in early care and education classrooms maintaining compliance in the programs guidelines and procedures. Adhering to Head Start performance standards as well as MN Rule 3 licensing regulations and Child & Adult Care Food Program. Strictly follow the highest standards of confidentiality and ethics when working with children, parents, and peers.
Observe, document, level and finalize each childs development using the designated online assessment tool. Observe each child on a regular basis in all developmental domains to establish an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) writing specific goals to achieve measurable outcomes that aligns with the childs IEP and/or therapy plan goals. Responsible for recording authentic observations and documentation to accurately measure progress toward child outcomes and established school readiness goals.
Partner with parents to establish child goals and present results of the childs progress towards meeting the goals using the programs assessment tool to parents in a manner that is easy to understand. Assist parents by providing individualized strategies in order to continue curriculum learning and progress towards meeting child goals in the home. Communicate with parents regarding the childs overall development including the childs successes and areas of needed improvement.
Actively participate in Practice-Based Coaching, including setting goals, implementing suggested practices and strategies within the classroom, reflecting on effectiveness with a Quality Support Coach and attending Community of Practice training sessions on a regular basis.
Promote parent participation in all areas of the Head Start Program. Communicate opportunities such as volunteer opportunities in the classroom, center meetings and events, Parent Education activities, community events and resources, Policy Council, and Advisory committees.
Participate in annual classroom quality observations, which is completed using the CLASS Observation Tool, which measures effective teacher-child interactions, providing useful data to drive teaching quality improvement. Classroom/teacher observation scores must meet federally established guidelines.
Actively participate in center, agency, partner and community meetings, classroom team meetings, family fun events, conferences and home visits.
Collaborate in discussion and planning with Fraser Mental Health Practitioners and/or ECSE Teachers to support the educational, mental health, and social emotional needs of individual children.

Requirements

BA/BS Degree in Early Childhood Special Education or Early Childhood Education or related field with a minimum of 12 college credits in special education, disabilities, behavior management and or trauma response.
Preferred educational coursework and/or experience in working with children with disabilities, behavior, trauma, or related areas.
Preferred Candidate has a Masters Degree in Special Education, Behavior Analysis, Trauma or related area.
1-year experience in an early childhood setting required.
Head Start experience preferred.
Experience working with children with identified special needs and/or mental health concerns
A valid drivers license and reliable transportation on a daily basis is required.
Must be able to successfully pass pre-placement Head Start physical exam.
Ability to lift 50 pounds and react to the demands of active 3-5 year olds.
Must be able to relate to and communicate effectively with varied socio-economic and multi-ethnic groups and/or individuals.

Starting Salary Range:

$23.45/Hr (AA) - $26.38/hr
$24.10/Hr (BA) - $27.05/hr

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 40 Hours/Week, Full Year
