Job Summary:
The Cryogenic tractor trailer mechanic is responsible for basic repairs and maintenance of diesel-powered class 8 tractors and cryogenic semi-trailers to include PM inspections, tire and wheel maintenance, air brake systems, lighting repairs, cryogenic pumps, unloading valves and piping, diesel powered auxiliary engines, as well as ensuring that equipment is maintained to company and DOT compliant standards.
Essential Functions:
- Cryogenic Systems
- Diagnose and maintain various unload piping and valves
- Diagnose and maintain diesel power auxiliary engines
- Diagnose and repair product metering systems
- Basic understand of various cryogenic trailers
- Tire and Wheel Maintenance
- Perform air pressure checks
- Check tread depth
- Identify tires that need to be changed or repaired
- Perform tire P.M. checks
- Replace tire and wheel assemblies
- Preventive Maintenance
- Proper lube techniques
- Brake check/applied stroke
- Battery check
- Under vehicle check/loose components
- Fault code identification
- Identify components of air brake system
- Operate brakes and identify irregular noises, air leaks
- Perform simple air system tests
- Measure lining thickness
- Adjust brakes
- Identify, remove, & replace all brake-related defective components
- Measure drums, rotors, cam bushings
- Charging Systems (electrical)
- Visually inspect batteries, clean connections, check condition of belts, check alternator mounting and pulley, and replace and adjust belts
- Cranking System (electrical)
- Inspect and test and replace batteries
- Visually inspect cables and cranking motor
- Clean the battery cables, connections and starter
- Replace or repair defective cables
- Lighting System and Electrical Accessories
- Repair minor wiring problems
- Repair minor lighting problems
- Replace bulbs, lenses and simple light assemblies
- Install or replace accessories such as heated mirrors, fans, radios, CB’s, spotlights, electronic devices, etc.
- Check and adjust coolant levels
- Visually inspect system for leaks
- Make minor repairs such as hose replacements, fan shrouds, leaking fittings, etc.
- Recognize permanent antifreezes and their requirements
- Use refractometer
- Use pressure tester
- Inspect housings for leaks
- Change oil and filter, if required, and clean breathers
- Driveline
- Inspect and diagnose vibration issues
- Lubricate drive line
Skills and Education Requirements:
- Must have a valid driver’s license
- Ability to provide own basic hand tools (List available upon request)
- Basic computer skills
- Ability to read and comprehend service manuals
- Knowledge of tools and equipment used in the shop to repair and maintain company equipment
- A basic knowledge of tractor and trailer maintenance
- Knowledge of D.O.T. regulations and out-of-service parameters for tractors, trailers and accessorial equipment.
- Knowledge of proper procedures for handling and disposal of hazardous waste materials.
The minimum education or formal training for this position includes.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license
- 1-year experience class 8 vehicle maintenance
