Trauma Counselor

EAC Network, a not-for-profit social service agency that empowers, assists, and cares for over 65,000 people in need through 100 programs across Long Island and NYC, seeks a Trauma Counselor for the Safe Harbour Providing Assistance Towards Healing (PATH) Program

The Trauma Counselor position is a non-exempt position paying $28-33 per hour. The hours of operation are Monday-Friday 9AM- 5 PM. The office is located in Central Islip, NY. The role reports to Supervisor.

Primary Purpose of Job:

The Trauma Counselor is responsible for assessing and counseling to victims of human trafficking, rape, and sexual abuse/assault, that are under 18 years of age. This includes promoting a trauma-informed approach through individual and group counseling, as well as, making referrals to other helping agencies. The Trauma Counselor will be a part of the Suffolk County Child Advocacy Centers Multi-Disciplinary Team and will coordinate relationships between other MDT members and additional human services agencies as needed.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Provide trauma-informed therapy for minor victims of human trafficking, rape, sexual abuse/assault and their non-offending family members.
  2. Provide trauma informed, victim centered counseling services and outreach to minor victims of human trafficking and youth at-risk of human trafficking to youth in Suffolk County, NY.
  3. Continually assess the needs of the victims and their families and reflect these needs in staffing, evaluations, treatment plans, and chart notes.
  4. Co-facilitate evidence-based girls support group.
  5. Serve as a consultant for courts, law enforcement, and the public in general.
  6. Assist with applying for public benefits, employment, medical care, return of personal property and short- and long-term coordination of such services.
  7. Make appropriate referrals for medical exams, mental health services, residential assistance,
  8. Document the services required to ensure accurate case records are maintained in CAC database.
  9. Collaborate with community partner agencies to deliver staff training regarding the identification of unaccompanied minors at risk of trafficking and connect then to services.
  10. Maintain accurate database of professional referral resources that assist stated population.
  11. Provide back-up and support to CAC for office coverage.
  12. Possibility to assist with future program helpline.
  13. Prepare monthly and quarterly statistical and annual reports as required by funding source.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required:

  1. Masters Degree in Mental Health Counseling or Social Work.
  2. Bilingual (Spanish/English Speaking) required.
  3. Minimum of two years of relevant experience.
  4. Experience providing Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
  5. Must be proficient in computer applications or other automated systems such as spreadsheets, Microsoft Office applications, calendar, and email and/or database software necessary to perform work assignments.
  6. Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  7. Must have access to automobile and possess valid NYS driver's license.
