As an Underwriter for our client, you'll be responsible for underwriting and servicing new business submissions and renewals, with a strong emphasis on profitability. You will also play a pivotal role in assisting and training Underwriting Assistants. Reporting directly to the Underwriting Manager, this is a full-time and hybrid position.

  • Underwrite and grow a profitable book of business based on eligibility, utilizing various factors such as the HNIC Risk Appetite Guide, loss analysis, exposure analysis, class code, and reinsurance acceptability.
  • Review Due Diligence reports, Loss control surveys, loss runs, premium payment timeliness, and take appropriate action when necessary. Collaborate with specialists such as premium auditors, claims adjusters, and loss control engineers for risk assessment.
  • Manage and delegate activities of underwriting assistants, ensuring timely responses to compliance issues and requests from various internal departments, as well as external requests from Agents, Brokers, and Policyholders.
  • Present accounts to management for underwriting approval, supported by the appropriate underwriting data and recommendations.
  • Stay current with industry rules, regulations, market conditions, and corporate underwriting disciplines by utilizing NCCI and State Insurance Department websites.
  • Assist the marketing department with presentations, proposals, and meetings with Brokers and Policyholders.

Requirements

  • Substantial commercial insurance experience, including exposure to Workers Compensation underwriting for individual accounts.
  • Knowledge of large account rating programs (i.e., Large Deductibles, Retrospective Rating, etc.).
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Internet software and Microsoft Products such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and Internet software.
