OPPORTUNITY

The Chief Equity, People & Culture (EPeC) Officer leads the Equity, People, and Culture Team, which includes administration and organizational learning. Together this department drives the organizational commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion and plays a critical and strategic role in strengthening, building, and further defining a holistic EPeC strategy across all facets of the employee lifecycle at the Vermont Foodbank. This Chief EPeC Officer hosts the team and supports systems that allow staff in each area to succeed. This includes staffing, compensation, structure, collaboration, communication system, and strategy. This innovative change manager will lead the team focused on transforming legacy systems that embed inequities and will develop and implement people strategies and organizational programs that grow and enable the organization to further its mission. Regarded as the leader of equity and people strategies, this role will help build an organizational and team culture that supports this effort. This position supervises the Director of Administration and Manager of Organizational Learning as part of a strategy to bring EpeC to all aspects of the organization.

Supervisors are expected to be unequivocally committed to enabling equity work throughout the organization by practicing inclusive and transparent management and helping to reshape positions, priorities, goals, and budgets to better center equity.

Therefore, everyone is expected to honor diversity, contribute to an inclusive organizational culture, and leverage their agency and scope of influence to center equity.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Responsibilities of the Chief Equity, People & Culture Officer include but are not limited to:

Department Leadership:

  • Develops, motivates, hosts, and supervises an effective team with an emphasis on collaboration, partnership, shared leadership, and transparency
  • Responsibilities include HR reporting and legal compliance; hiring and onboarding; performance and workload management; conflict management and employee relations, establishing backup plans and cross-training; goal setting and coaching; and personal and professional development planning
  • Clearly articulates and shares out organizational and department vision and expectations and ensures regular review of them
  • Contributes to fostering a culture of continuous learning and cross-departmental collaboration
  • Works with team to develop and manage inclusive and responsive departmental budget
  • Ensures EPeC Teams work is connected to strategic direction and organizational goals and works with each team on annual priorities and work plans connected to these goals
  • Meets regularly with direct reports and serves as connective tissue between EPeC Team functions to support collaboration and communication
  • Evaluates the performance of the EPeC department and assess the team to ensure it is appropriately structured and staffed
  • Measures and monitors progress on organizational and EPeC Teams equity commitments and holds the team accountable to them
  • Ensures EPeC representation on appropriate internal committees

Organizational Leadership and Strategy:

  • Leads process and strategy for people strategies and plans consistent with the overall Vermont Foodbank strategic direction as part of the Department Head Team
  • Works with the Vermont Foodbank leaders and staff to define the organizational development needs, design and facilitate solutions; lead smooth organizational transitions using best practice change management methodologies
  • Serves as a standing member of the Organizational Resource Team
  • Builds credibility with leaders by demonstrating an understanding of the Vermont Foodbank operations, strategy, and challenges, aligning short and long-term people goals with the strategic direction and leading/driving initiatives to assist the organization in achieving the mission
  • Anticipate and respond to changing organizational needs; lead smooth organizational transitions using best practice change management methodologies; influence lasting change in assigned responsibilities by serving as a change advocate on company-wide strategies and initiatives

Human Resources and EPeC Strategy:

  • Leads in promoting a culture that is productive, open, empowering, and equitable; participates in developing and leading the organization in DEI initiatives in concert with the Manager of Organizational Learning and DEI Resource Team
  • Collaborates with and influences leaders to prioritize strategic people initiatives and solutions that accelerate the achievement of organizational goals through talent management, diversity and inclusion, rewards and recognition, and organizational effectiveness
  • Shapes the culture to align with Vermont Foodbank goals and initiatives by supporting and coaching leaders
  • Develops and executes resourcing and talent strategy for market/business/function that ensures we have the right people in the right place at the right time
  • Develops and drives the employee engagement strategy to help make Vermont Foodbank an employer of choice
  • Holds commitment and accountability to VF Racial Equity goals
  • Leads staff in ensuring that Foodbank insurance needs are compliant with board policies and best practices by working with the insurance broker on proper and necessary insurance.
  • Coaches leaders and staff along an equity learning path centered on how racial oppression and dominant economic systems result in sustained poverty and hunger
  • Compiles and presents department work via reports and presentations to board and staff

  • Stays informed about the work, needs, and priorities of the organization
  • Optimizes the contribution of staff to allow for organizational development
  • Leverages professional networks to deliver better results through expertise, resources, relationships, and connections
  • Assesses the varying needs of Vermont Foodbank and its people and leads through influence and emotional intelligence to support the mission of the Foodbank to meet and sustain its goals
  • Positively contributes to an organizational culture of safe and secure food handling, warehousing, and distribution
  • The Foodbank relies on volunteers every day to fulfill our mission. All Foodbank employees must support our culture of philanthropy by treating every volunteer with appreciation and respect
  • Attends meetings of the Board of Trustees and its various committees as required
  • Remains up-to-date in the field through continuing education opportunities
  • This position will occasionally be required to travel to other Foodbank locations and to attend required meetings, trainings, etc. Some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected
  • In instances of a federal, state, or locally declared emergency, Vermont Foodbank is typically considered an essential service and emergency responder; all its employees may be called in to perform regular or emergent duties.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of progressive experience in people and culture or organizational learning with a strategic focus or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years providing accountability for equity, diversity, and inclusion in organizations or equivalent experience
  • 3-5 years of experience managing people leaders
  • Experience working with, coaching, and influencing leaders
  • Proven experience in a leadership role in a growing, evolving organization
  • A Bachelors Degree or equivalent experience; a masters degree and/or professional certification and experience working in a non-profit setting is preferred.
  • Culturally competent and self-reflective leader who understands the effects of race, class, ethnicity, income, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, and other issues of difference in society and can lead direct conversations about them.
  • Commitment to building authentic partnerships with Department Heads and serving as a member of the shared leadership team and the principal EPeC contact and expert for the organization
  • Ability to balance equity as a priority with HR compliance responsibilities
  • Strong knowledge of diversity, equity, inclusion, compensation, employment laws, FLSA, FMLA, employee relations, staffing and selection, performance management, training, and development
  • Ability to understand business
