We work with and through a network of more than 300 community partners food shelves, meal sites, senior centers, after-school programs, schools, and hospitals. OPPORTUNITY

The Chief Financial Officer plays a leadership role in the future growth and development of Vermont Foodbank by providing input on a broad range of strategic, operational, and financial issues. The CFO leads the finance team, including the AP/AR Coordinator and Staff Accountant. The Chief Financial Officer is responsible for the organization's financial well-being by overseeing: accounting functions; safeguarding the organization's assets; and ensuring compliance with Federal, State, and local laws, regulations, and contractual requirements. The Chief Financial Officer also is responsible for general ledger entry, account analysis, inventory accounting, and preparation of financial statements and reports to develop and improve systems continuously. The CFO shall consistently communicate accurate financial information to the Chief Executive Officer. This position is responsible for ensuring that the Foodbank carries out its financial activities ethically.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Responsibilities of the Chief Financial Officer include but are not limited to:

Department Leadership:

  • Develops, motivates, hosts, and supervises an effective team with an emphasis on collaboration, partnership, shared leadership, and transparency
  • Responsibilities include hiring and onboarding, performance and workload management, goal setting, conflict management, establishing backup plans and cross-training, coaching, and personal and professional development planning
  • Clearly articulates and shares organizational and department vision and expectations and ensures regular review of them
  • Supervises Staff Accountant and Accounts Payable/Accounts Receivable Coordinator
  • Contributes to fostering a culture of continuous learning and cross-departmental collaboration
  • Measures and monitors progress on organizational and Finance Teams equity commitments and holds team accountable to them
  • Ensures Finance Team work is connected to strategic direction and organizational goals and works with each team on annual priorities and work plans related to these goals
  • Meets regularly with direct reports and serves as connective tissue between Finance Team functions to support collaboration and communication
  • Evaluates the performance of the Finance department and assess the team to ensure it is appropriately structured and staffed

Organizational Leadership and Strategy:

  • Leads process and strategy for financial and investment matters as a component of the overall Vermont Foodbank strategic direction as part of the senior leadership team
  • Works with the Vermont Foodbank leaders to define the organizational development needs, design and facilitate solutions; leads smooth organizational transitions using best practice change management methodologies
  • Serves as a standing member of the Organizational Resource Team
  • Ability to proactively identify and diagnose organizational needs and deliver strategic visioning along with the execution of projects that contribute to that vision
  • Creates and executes the annual budget planning, and cost management process, in alignment with the strategic direction
  • Creates a culture of inclusion and understanding around Finance

Budgeting, Forecasting, and Financial Oversight:

  • Oversee all aspects of the organization's financial management, including accounting functions; financial and cash flow management, accounts payable and accounts receivable; banking practices, financial reporting, and inventory management; financial transactions and account monitoring and reconciliation; and investment monitoring in partnership with professional investment advisors
  • Develop and maintain a procurement policy utilizing standard business practices.
  • Provide guidance, training, and technical assistance to staff and volunteers as appropriate in accounting and other policies and procedures
  • Works with Department Heads to conduct inclusive and responsive program cost analysis and achieve budgetary goals
  • Responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining all internal accounting controls
  • Generate monthly financial reports for department heads, finance committees, and board meetings
  • Lead investment policy development and monitor Foodbank investment portfolio in partnership with professional investment advisors
  • Track and manage restricted money through temporarily restricted net assets for grant and restricted donations reporting
  • Lead board finance committee and attend meetings of the board of trustees and its other various committees as required
  • Work with department heads and the grants manager to implement grant accounting and reporting requirements
  • Provide oversight and review of inventory processes and systems and the financial impact of those procedures
  • Coordinate year-end audit, and single audit activities, with minimal exceptions
  • Monitor all expenses within the Foodbank to comply with approved policies
  • Continually evaluate established financial policies and procedures and update or modify them as necessary
  • Monitor and manage all bank and investment accounts
  • Provides excellent management of federally-funded programs with a high level of accountability and adherence to prescribed procedures

  • Stays informed about the work, needs, and priorities of the organization
  • Leverages professional networks to deliver better results through expertise, resources, relationships, and connections
  • Assesses the varying needs of Vermont Foodbank and its people and leads through influence and emotional intelligence to support the mission of the Foodbank to meet and sustain its goals
  • Positively contributes to an organizational culture of safe and secure food handling, warehousing, and distribution
  • The Foodbank relies on volunteers every day to fulfill our mission. All Foodbank employees must support our culture of philanthropy by treating every volunteer with appreciation and respect
  • Attends meetings of the board of trustees and its various committees as required
  • Remains up-to-date in the field through continuing education opportunities.
  • This position will occasionally be required to travel to other Foodbank locations and to attend required meetings, trainings, etc. Some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected
  • In instances of a federal, state, or locally declared emergency, Vermont Foodbank is typically considered an essential service and emergency responder; all its employees may be called in to perform regular or emergent duties

Requirements

  • 8+ experience in finance, accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting
  • A Bachelors Degree in a related field and significant finance experience in a highly regulated environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to Vermont Foodbanks mission
  • Excellent interpersonal and team skills
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision
  • Ability to make executive decisions consistently
  • Good working knowledge of not-for-profit organizations and dynamics
  • Outstanding oral, written, and presentation skills
  • Proven experience in a leadership role in a growing, evolving organization
  • 3-5 years of experience managing people leaders; experience working with, coaching, and influencing leaders
  • Demonstrated understanding of nonprofit investment practices
  • Computer literacy in standard financial programs
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated change leadership and management skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, to create a free flow of information at all levels of the organization; approachable and transparent
  • Commitment to building authentic partnerships with Department Heads and serving as a member of the shared leadership team
  • Ability to proactively identify and diagnose organizational needs and deliver
