OVERVIEW
The wheeled vehicle mechanic is primarily responsible for supervising and performing maintenance and recovery operations on wheeled vehicles and associated items, as well as heavy-wheeled vehicles and select armored vehicles.
JOB DUTIES
- Maintain wheeled vehicles, their associated trailers and material handling equipment systems.
- Inspect, service, maintain, repair, replace, adjust and test of wheeled vehicles and material handling equipment systems, subsystems and components.
- Service automotive electrical systems, including wiring harness, starting and charging systems.
- Perform wheeled vehicle recovery operations.
TRAINING
Job training for a wheeled vehicle mechanic requires 10 weeks of Basic Combat Training and 12 weeks of Advanced Individual Training with on-the-job instruction. Part of this time is spent in the classroom, and part takes place in the field.
Advanced Individual Training: 12 weeks at Fort Jackson, SC
HELPFUL SKILLS
- Interest in auto mechanics and the industrial arts.
- Preference for physical work.
- Troubleshooting and repairing mechanical problems.
- Interest in automotive engines and how they work.
REQUIRED ASVAB SCORE(S)
- Mechanical Maintenance (MM): 92 OR
- Mechanical Maintenance (MM): 87
- General Technical (GT): 85
FUTURE CIVILIAN CAREERS

ATTENTION: To join the National Guard without prior service, you must meet these mandatory requirements:
- Be between the ages of 17 and 35
- Be a U.S. citizen or able to work in the U.S.
- Be a resident of the state of Virginia.
- Be at least a junior in high school, or have a high school diploma or a GED certificate
- Achieve a minimum score on the ASVAB test
- Meet medical, physical and moral requirements

For prior service the general requirements are:
- Age – Must qualify for non-regular retired pay by age 60.
- Physical – Must meet height/weight and current medical requirements.
- Education – Must meet education standards for the MOS or option for which you enlist.
- Background – Must have most current DD 214, NGB22 or discharge order and have an approved DD Form 368 Conditional Release.
