ARServices is looking for a Writer / Editor to support the NSWC Indian Head Divisions Corporate Communications Division. NSWC IHDs Corporate Communications Division provides all internal and external communication products, services, policies and procedures in the areas of public affairs, strategic communication, visual information and protocol to develop awareness and understanding of NSWC IHD to internal, local, and national and international audiences. The division keeps the Commanding Officer, Technical Director and other command leadership apprised of external and internal information related to the command, employees, and public or congressional interests. The division exercises overall control, coordination, and direction of NSWC IHD public information, media relations, internal and strategic communication, environmental public involvement, security and policy review, visual information, and protocol activities through a proactive communication program.

The ideal candidate will lead the building of coalitions throughout NSWC IHD and with the media, external stakeholders, and others. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate professional experience writing and copy editing articles, press releases or other written content describing complex scientific or technical topics using lay language for a general audience using the Associated Press (AP) Stylebook.

In this position you will require current Secret clearance.

Principal Duties

  • Writing and Editing
  • Using journalistic AP style, write, edit, proofread and copyedit a variety of documents, press releases, human interest features, magazines, social media content, science articles and other journalistic-type articles
  • Plan and prepare written content for dissemination both internally and externally to the public
  • Ensure all documents meet established organizational and industry standards
  • Research, develop, investigate, and write a variety of science-related and human interest news and feature stories through interviews, observations, networking, and library/online resources for publication in national-level print magazines, press releases, and online content
  • Evaluate and recommend the tone and intended audience of the story, investigate and determine the validity of story leads, and collaborate with the creative team and other technical departments
  • Writing and editing duties shall include (but are not limited to)
  • Content for a variety of written communications for internal and external audiences, including content for social media, web, newsletters, brochures, fact sheets, text for graphics, presentations, talking points, and other items as needed
  • Conducting research to get factual information and authentic detail.
  • Presenting drafts to Corporate Communications staff and customers for feedback
  • Working with Corporate Communications staff and customers to shape material for publishing
  • Reviewing and performing AP style copyediting and proofreading of all content; writing must be in accordance with AP style and other style guides as prescribed by the Corporate Communications Division
  • Providing publication editing and writing support to include edits for grammar, punctuation, spelling, clarity of sentences, format, and adherence to command guidelines
  • Organizing complex technical information for effective presentation and communication to the audience
  • Writing, proofreading and editing the following: scriptwriting, news releases and briefings; transcription of oral interviews, podcasts, livestreams and videos; and special publication projects
  • Event Support
  • Provide pre-event, on-site and post-event assistance to the commands Protocol Officer and other Corporate Communications staff as needed
  • Assist with tasks related to command events and visits including, but not limited to, data entry, creation and distribution of event invitations, shipping/transport of event-related supplies, placing orders for event equipment from vendors, set-up and tear-down, check-in of guests at events, event recordkeeping, and other tasks as assigned
  • Maintain professional conduct during interactions with internal and external entities and follow military traditions and protocol

  • Secret minimum clearance, current

Education

  • Bachelors Degree (BS/BA) in English, journalism, communications, or a related field

Experience

  • At least six (6) years of professional experience are expected for this position
  • Communicating with general audiences using the Associated Press (AP) Stylebook
  • Strong writing skills to assist in the planning, writing, and editing of feature news and technical articles, internal communications, reports and presentations for release to internal and external audiences

Desired Qualifications

  • Ability to analyze and prepare documentation and possess the ability to identify and resolve complex problems
  • Excellent oral and written communication; including technical writing, plain English writing, grammar, and formatting
  • Detail-oriented, self-starter with excellent communication and time management skills
  • Experience in photography and photo editing is desirable
  • Experience providing pre-event, on-site and post-event assistance is desirable
  • Familiarity with NSWC IHD and/or the Department of the Navy
  • Knowledge of Department of Defense (DoD) policies and directives
  • Experience with automated systems, including database maintenance and ad hoc reporting
  • Prior military experience or previous support to the Department of Defense as a civilian or contractor
  • Experience with the review, development, updating and management of technical reports, plans, management systems, databases, and related documentation with regard to:
  • Navy Physical Security (PS),
  • Anti-Terrorism (AT),
  • Force Protection (FP),
  • Emergency Management,
  • Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP),
  • Operations Security (OPSEC),
  • Communication Security (COMSEC), and
  • Information Security (INFOSEC)
  • Experience performing surveys, inspections and assessments of facilities, buildings, and processes.
  • Knowledge and experience regarding Navy and regional PS, OPSEC, COMSEC, INFOSEC, emergency management, FP, and contingency management programs and requirements.
  • Knowledge of energetics, ordnance development and storage requirements and processes.
  • Ability to quickly learn to use new IT systems and software
