Conservation Corps Minnesota & Iowa (CCMI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and AmeriCorps grantee that engages hundreds of youth and young adults each year in programs and initiatives that improve access to outdoor recreation, restore natural habitat, protect waterways, and respond to community needs and natural disasters. Our mission is to engage youth and young adults in meaningful service, leadership development, and environmental stewardship. Our vision is a world in which everyone has equitable access to nature, is equipped to succeed in career and life, and is empowered to make a difference in conserving natural resources.

Program Summary: Youth Outdoors is an AmeriCorps program that focuses on both youth development and natural resource management. AmeriCorps members serve for 11 months each year, mid-January through mid-December, leading diverse high-school age youth in environmental service-learning that benefits the community. The program operates primarily in the Twin Cities metro, but with programming and travel occurring around the state. Restoration projects occur in partnership with state and federal agencies as well as nonprofit organizations.

Position Summary: The Field Coordinator (FC) is integral to the Youth Outdoors programs goal of accomplishing natural resource management projects, as well as providing training, education, coordination, and leadership to ensure a positive and safe experience for AmeriCorps and youth participants. The Field Coordinator must have the ability to assist in personnel management, maintain equipment, and coordinate or provide training in technical and personal development skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate with program staff to plan and lead training for new AmeriCorps and youth members, which may include personnel management topics (e.g. leadership, crew dynamics, teambuilding) as well as safety, vehicle operation, equipment use, and natural resource management techniques.
  • Coordinate with staff, partners, and crews on project details to ensure crews are properly equipped, including emergency response plans and personal protective equipment, and projects are accomplished in an efficient, safe, and consistent manner.
  • Work with crews in the field (60% of effort), which may include providing additional knowledge and training for specific projects, filling in for absent members, and conducting site safety audits to ensure crews are working safely and following Corps Policy.
  • Assist with reviewing work accomplishment forms to ensure accuracy in reporting.
  • Manage program fleet. Ensure trucks are DOT certified, working with Enterprise to schedule maintenance and coordinate with DNR shops for maintenance and repair of leased assets.
  • Ensure shop spaces are properly equipped, clean, and organized for safe and efficient use. Maintain an accurate inventory of equipment, fleet, and safety supplies. Purchase and distribute equipment and supplies.
  • Stay updated on and apply best practices for leadership, equipment and fleet operation, and conservation work. Implement and follow all safety requirements of OSHA, CCMI, and project hosts.
  • Support AmeriCorps and youth development to ensure participants achieve personal and program success, including setting clear expectations and working with program staff to handle elevated issues or concerns arising from participant behavior, team dynamics, and project work.
  • Attend and participate in program and organizational meetings to improve programming.

Qualifications:

  • Programming and leadership experience (preferably with the 15-25 age group) and ability to problem solve and respond competently to situations associated with managing young adults. Ability to lead, delegate, supervise, mentor, and positively influence others.
  • Initiative to act independently with minimal supervision and ability to multi-task and be flexible with responsibilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for internal personnel management and external outreach.
  • Demonstrated commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion, and working with diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated experience in coordinating and facilitating training.
  • Working knowledge of natural resource project management from a variety of disciplines such as invasive species, water quality improvement, trail maintenance and construction, prescribed fire, wildlife and fish habitat improvement and forest/prairie management.
  • Familiarity with AmeriCorps and local, state, and federal natural resource agencies.
  • Experience with hand and power tools, chainsaw use, small engine and tool maintenance, as well as basic construction skills.
  • Experience with the use of trucks, trailers, and UTVs both on and off-road.
  • Valid drivers license and safe driving record.
  • Ability to pass DOT physical.
  • Must meet minimum physical requirements and successfully pass annual work capacity test.
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required. Bachelors degree in Environmental Education, Natural Resource Conservation, Youth Development or related field is preferred.
  • Current Wilderness First Aid and CPR (or better) certificate.
  • Must pass the National Sex Offender Public Registry and criminal history (NSOPR) check defined as no positive hits on the NSOPR and no history of violent offenses on the criminal history check.

Additional Information: Travel and overnights are required for Corpsmember trainings, staff meetings, and outreach events. This position requires a significant amount of time at all crew locations, with occasional out-of-town travel for up to 12 days to assist crews on technical projects. The FC must also be available for occasional 30-day disaster deployments.
