Our hire will perform a variety of tasks in the skilled trade and craft of carpentry to include framing, fine finish, and custom fabrication. The hire will also perform a variety of semi-skills tasks in the maintenance of County of Blair properties, road, and bridges, alternating between Highway and Facilities Units as needed.

Essential duties as a carpenter include following blueprints and building plans to meet needs of project or assignment; constructing or repairing building frameworks, including walls, floors, and doorframes; measuring, cutting, or shaping wood, plastic, and other materials; building, assembling, installing, repairing, altering cabinets, siding, decks, furniture; installing drywall; installing structures and fixtures; tiling floors, laying floors, and installing carpet; providing a quality, finished product on time and on budget, delivering attention to detail, match to specifications, and compliance with building codes; erecting scaffolds or ladder to perform tasks above ground level; calculating amounts of required materials; operating tools and equipment according to established safety practices; inspecting own work for quality; providing guidance to helpers; inspecting work of others and correcting as warranted before project sign-off.

Essential duties performed as maintenance technician when not working as carpenter can include a variety of preventive maintenance tasks such as painting, basic cement masonry, drywall, replacing glass, changing lightbulbs and batteries, repairing ballasts and light fixtures, unstopping toilets, repairing and replacing door knobs or locks, assembling and moving furniture, or maintaining grounds. Duties can also involve dumping, spreading, and tamping asphalt to repair joints; patching broken or eroded pavement; clearing debris from catch basins, culverts, ditches, and drains; operating equipment such as mower, snow plow, tractor, weed whacker, and truck; and responding to emergency or off-hours calls.

Requirements

Qualified candidates will possess a high school diploma or GED; a minimum of one year's full-time, hands-on experience as residential carpenter plus minimum of one year's experience in construction work, trades assistance, maintenance, HVAC, etc.; accuracy and attention to detail; ability to read and follow blueprints and assembly instructions; knowledge of variety of building maintenance procedures and techniques; knowledge of machinery, equipment, and tools necessary for maintenance and repair of public-used roads and buildings; skill in using hand and power tools; skill in using job-related measuring tools and calculating fractional measurements, skill in basic math; problem-solving skills; and customer service, diligence, initiative, and pride in work well done.
