Job Overview:

The Manager of a Laboratory Section plans, directs or coordinates operations of the specific section of the Pathology Department, and assures adherence to the standards required for its accreditation by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), Clinical Laboratory Improvements Act (CLIA) as well as compliance with standards of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The Manager supervises all employees in the section and is accountable for cost control, staffing, and discipline.

Job Functions:

  • Manages personnel to include interviewing, work allocation, orientation and training, staff development, problem resolution, evaluating performance, making recommendations for personnel actions, and motivating employees to achieve peak performance. Is responsible for their employee's output and conduct.
  • Understands laboratory methods, demonstrates knowledge of pathological processes with correlation of disease states and test results. Reviews and analyzes section activities and data to improve operations, and utilization of services.
  • Assures compliance with standards set forth by accrediting agencies: CAP, JCAHO, CLIA, AABB, FDA and CMS. Develops and implements policies and procedures for the Section, and verifies annual review of all policies and procedures.
  • Assists in preparation of an annual expense budget for the Section, adheres to the budget, monitors expenditures, and justifies significant variances. Anticipates, evaluates the need for and recommends new methods, instrumentation or technology for the Section.
  • Oversees quality control/assurance programs related to laboratory test methodology, equipment, and supplies; understands, participates, and applies Continuous Quality Improvement.
  • Develops goals for the Section and follows through on meeting these goals in a timely manner. Manages projects to include developing a plan, coordinating necessary resources, setting project timelines, keeping Director informed of progress, and completing project within established time limits.
  • Acts as a resource to customers, both within the department and outside the department; interacts with co-workers, physicians, nursing service, patients, vendors, and the public in a professional and pleasant manner.
  • Demonstrates pro-active problem solving skills to include identifying a problem and taking appropriate action; knows when to seek guidance and communicates any relevant information to Assistant Lab Director or Director.
  • Views work situations from a broad context, and understands the complimentary, interdependent nature of work processes; assesses the impact and implications of decisions on other components of the organization and determines the effects of one's individual work within the broad context.
  • Attends Leadership Skills courses; puts new knowledge, understanding, or skill to practical use on the job; furthers learning by using newly acquired knowledge or skills to use on a consistent basis.
  • Develops programs for section orientation, competency and training; demonstrates ability to validate competency.
  • The job responsibilities of this position may include cross training in other functions or positions to ensure satisfactory operation of the department/work unit or to permit flexible staffing assignments.
  • Supports the mission and vision of the Methodist Healthcare System and demonstrates excellent customer service at all times.
  • Must learn, comply with and enforce System and facility safety policies and rules; must use appropriate safety equipment and procedures at all times; must immediately report all unsafe conditions to supervisors; must be familiar with all safety features of equipment, tools or materials encompassed by
  • Job duties; and must check with supervisors (prior to job performance) if there is a question as to the safe procedure to be used for any job function.

  • Completes other duties as assigned.

Educations and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree AND one of the following certifications: MT (ASCP), CLS(NCA), MT(AAB), MLS(ASCP), MLT(ASCP) OR MT(AMT)
  • Minimum of five years full-time experience in the clinical laboratory.
  • Blood bank Certification (AABB) preferred.
