POSITION TITLE: Assistant Nurse Manager

REPORTS TO (TITLE): Chief Nursing Officer

DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

The Assistant Nurse Manager performs key responsibilities and meets position requirements as outlined in the hospitals RN job description. In addition to RN duties, the Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) is responsible for unit operations, fiscal and staff management, managing patient care services and coordinating staff scheduling. The Assistant Nurse Manager will support and direct nursing staff assignments and facilitate communication with other disciplines, departments and community resources. This includes direct supervision of employees and conducting performance evaluations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Unit Operations

  • Oversee unit operations including (and not limited to) timely completion and review of multidisciplinary treatment plans (MDTP); checking logs (refrigerator, emergency cart log, POC testing, legal tracking logs); accuracy of patient chart; and Medication Dispense discrepancy resolution.
  • Audit all seclusion or restraints interventions on assigned shift.
  • Monitor inventory of office, medical, and patient care supplies. Request replenishment of supplies as needed.
  • Alert the Administrator on Call (AOC) when urgent or extreme events occur. Examples include, but are not limited to, AWOL patients, 911 or urgent ambulance transfers, patient injuries, staff injuries, and incidents involving law enforcement.
  • Gather and compile data for daily shift and routine reporting. Prepare shift report and review with oncoming House Charge (HC) and forward copy to CNO. Routine reports include Shift Summary, Bed Control, and Incident Reports.
  • Prepare and investigate Incident Reports (IR) in an accurate and timely fashion; follow up with staff education to prevent reoccurring incidents.
  • Maintain a clutter free working environment.
  • Directly supervise nursing staff on assigned shift.
  • The NM collects staff performance data from the House Charges to ensure proper supervision and to provide accurate meaningful introductory and annual performance evaluations. Review performance evaluations with CNO before reviewing with staff.
  • Collaborate with CNO to address performance concerns or potential need for staff disciplinary measures.
  • Support CNO, HC, and RNs to provide a high-quality orientation and ongoing education for clinical staff. Continually education staff on key issues relating to hospital policies and procedures and health care regulations.
  • Ensure accurate and timely shift-to-shift reports.
  • Monitor clinical issues for high acuity patients or patients with unusual problems.
  • Coordinate off site tests, emergency room visits, admission and discharges, lab processes, work orders and audits.
  • Address and resolve patient and family complaints. Proactively work with CNO when a complaint becomes a potential grievance and alert the hospitals Internal Patient Advocate.

Fiscal and Staff Management

  • Oversee staff assignments to prevent unnecessary overtime and ensure appropriate staffing levels based on census and acuity assessments. Manage appropriate staffing levels in conjunction with Staffing Coordinator. Report any staffing concerns to CNO. Document approved overtime on employee time adjustment forms.

Manage Patient Care Services

Staff Scheduling

  • Monitor all nursing staff attendance records cards for unapproved overtime, and patterns of attendance and punctuality. Completes time records for all staff and forward to payroll each pay period.
  • The NM works closely with the Staffing Scheduling Coordinator (SSC) to prepare staff schedules to ensure appropriate staffing levels for upcoming shifts. Reviews staff level concerns with CNO.

Requirements

POSITION Requirements

Education/Licensure

  • Current California RN License
  • Current CPR certification
  • Current NCI equivalent as approved by the Chief Nursing Officer (or obtained within the first 30 days of hire).
  • Knowledge and experience of psychiatric diagnosis and associated risks, medications, biological systems, nursing process, treatment planning, and leadership. New RN graduates may meet these requirements if they have completed a psychiatric rotation as part of nursing school or have psychiatric experience in another role.
  • Stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and stand for sustained period of time.
  • Walk, push, pull, lift, carry objects from a lower to higher position or horizontally from position to position or otherwise move objects.
  • Feel sizes, shapes, temperatures, and textures by touching with skin, particularly that of the fingertips.
  • Express or exchange ideas orally and potentially loudly, accurately, or quickly.
  • Perceive the nature of sound with no less than a 40 db loss @ 1000 Hz and 2000 Hz with or without correction.
  • Exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently.
  • Able to provide manual and mechanical restraints for patients who are physically acting out and are potentially dangerous (at times this occurs on the floor)
  • Minimum standard of visual acuity with or without correction.
  • While worker may possibly be subjected to temperature changes, the worker is generally not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions as the work is predominantly inside.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

The ANM will pass initial and annual competency evaluations including (not limited to): suicide prevention, safe use of restraints, de-escalation interventions, medication knowledge, code blue/emergency interventions, infection prevention, and appropriate use of seclusion and restraints. The NM will need to complete additional competencies related to managing patient care, staffing systems, and internal reporting requirements.

The Assistant Nurse Manager has a high level of knowledge of Policies, Procedures, Unit Operations, Hospital Operations, Health Care Regulations and educates staff on key issues. The ANM will demonstrate that, in addition to being competent, they are skilled in applying knowledge and competency in their daily nursing practice.
