We are actively seeking an Associate General Counsel to join Fleetio. This role will report to the CFO. As the first Legal team hire, you will own, build, and scale the Legal function. To achieve this mission, you must have strong opinions based on past experience about how to structure systems & processes and the sequencing of when & what to focus on as Fleetio grows. We have existing contracts, templates, systems, SOPs, and other necessary elements you would expect to see at a software company, but we need a dedicated and experienced owner to mature the Legal function from its current owner (Fleetios CFO).

In this role, you will have a unique opportunity to impact the growth, direction, and future of Fleetio(link removed) Ideal candidates will have significant past legal experience at a B2B SaaS that has scaled well from $20M to $100M+ ARR. We value experience in enterprise, partnership, and marketplace deals. You are a natural problem-solver with a strong ability to navigate ambiguity. You're not afraid when challenged and have the ability to balance achieving business objectives, properly scaling the business, and mitigating risk.

This is a full-time role that can be held at our HQ in Birmingham, Alabama, or remotely anywhere in the continental United States. Be sure to mention coffee in your cover letter so we know you actually read this.


Key Responsibilities

Build & scale Fleetios Legal operations:

  • Define, build, and scale the Legal operations of Fleetios business while also running the function.
  • Our existing Legal operations is not sacred. We expect it to change.

Run Fleetios Legal operations:

  • You will work with a cross-functional team, including Sales, Deal Desk, Business Operations, People, Accounting, and FP&A to make sure we are properly handling customer subscription agreements, vendor agreements, partnership agreements, intellectual property licensing agreements, and reseller/referral agreements.
  • Given our volume of agreements, you will need to use systems and processes that you define, implement, and run.
  • We have a collection of outside specialized attorneys who we expect you will lean on for assistance even after your team is built. Plus, we know you have trusted experts you can bring on to Fleetios outsourced team.

Elevate our customer contracting experience:

  • You will work closely with Fleetios Deal Desk function to define and scale how we help a customer cruise through the sales contracting process. Deal Desk will handle the day-to-day customer contracting flow.
  • This is a very important part of our business since we are driven to delight our customers. A poor experience during the sales process or an upgrade process will sour the vibe we are trying to create.
  • Deal Desk, Sales, Product, CX, and Accounting will all look to the Legal and Business Operations teams for support.
  • We want our customer experience when it comes to legal matters to match the joy they experience using our products to solve their problems. We truly think the legal process can be easy and pleasant.

Own the Legal function:

  • Establish a risk mitigation framework for Fleetio that takes into account Fleetios growth goals, product vision, and the markets we serve.
  • Evaluate the current state of Fleetios Legal function to determine priorities given the framework you put in place.
  • Establish and modify processes. We believe in using automation and templates to reduce repetitive work and increase the volume of work that can be effectively handled throughout the company by different roles.
  • Select, implement, and manage systems needed by the Legal team in conjunction with our Business Operations team.
  • Advise other teams at Fleetio on best practices to comply with the risk mitigation framework you will establish. For example, you will be expected to work with our GTM and Product leaders to codify best practices regarding GDPR, CCPA, and other privacy considerations.
  • Plan for the future of Fleetios Legal function as our business expands and new opportunities present themselves.

Evolve our use of outside counsel:

  • You will be responsible for managing and coordinating Fleetios team of outside attorneys across a variety of issues affecting the business (investor relationships, customer agreements, employment, IP, vendor agreements, etc.).
  • As our business evolves and grows, you will also need to source new experts in specialized areas, including other countries than the United States.
  • While cost savings from bringing some functions in-house would be nice, this should not be the primary goal of the Associate General Counsel role.

Plan & manage the growth of the Legal team:

  • We expect you to build the Legal team with in-house talent as we grow. Fleetio is a system and process-driven company, but we also depend on recruiting, retaining, and developing highly skilled talent.
  • Initially, you will be the sole member of the Legal team. However, given our rapid growth and the assumed gaps between your risk mitigation framework and Fleetios current capabilities, we expect you will develop and execute a multi-year hiring plan.

Our team

Your future fellow team members currently live in Birmingham, Chicago, and along the Gulf Coast. The Birmingham group periodically works out of the HQ building when the flow is right, but also works digitally first along with much of our company. In a nutshell, we want the best talent located wherever they happen to be. We can usually catch each other for quick Slack pings or Zoom calls from roughly the core hours of 9 am to 3 pm Central. We rely heavily on asynchronous communication through Asana, our company-wide project management system.

From a systems standpoint, we use a lot of them. We rely on the saying: a great solution today can become a problem tomorrow. We are constantly thinking about if processes or systems will scale. If we can get a few years from a system before we need to replace it, then well implement it. We rely heavily on automated integrations between our systems so we can keep manual work down.
