Position Summary

As Interim Chief Executive Officer (Interim CEO) at the Workforce Partnership your primary responsibility will be to create stability, be a servant leader and manage the business to ensure the efficient and effective delivery of workforce development services through the transition of hiring and onboarding a permanent CEO. You will be responsible for the management of the organization's resources, including personnel, finances, and programs to ensure the organization meets its mission and goals.

To be successful as an Interim CEO you should have a strong background in business operations, financial management and program management. You should also have excellent leadership and communication skills, and be able to work effectively with diverse stakeholders, including staff, board members, funders, and community partners. A passion for the organization's mission and a commitment to social justice and equity are also essential.

This is a temporary term role that will end when a permanent CEO is identified.

The Work

Reporting to the Workforce Development Board and San Diego Consortium Policy Board, the Interim CEO will lead the day-to-day operations, which includes the responsibility for planning, implementation, administration, and management of all Workforce Partnership programs and systems. Provides timely updates to the Workforce Development Board, the San Diego Consortium Policy Board, the community, and other internal and external constituency groups.

The Interim CEO will shepherd the organization through a transition period, keep focus on its goals and core values and push forward with current initiatives. Working with the executive team, Workforce Development Board and Policy Board, the Interim CEOs primary duty will be to keep the Workforce Partnership on track while the search for a new chief executive is underway.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee business operations and provide leadership and guidance that motivates staff and instills confidence from community-based organizations and funding partners
  • Maintain open, direct and responsive communications with members of the Policy Board and the Workforce Development Board, which include but are not limited to providing regular updates on the organization's performance and seeking guidance and support as needed
  • Develop rapport and relationships with colleagues, subordinates, and external contacts
  • Drive the mission and focus of the organization
  • Minimize or eliminate negative financial impacts of a vacant CEO role
  • Maintain and improve employee retention
  • Foster a positive and inclusive organizational culture that values diversity, equity, and inclusion, and promotes a healthy work environment for staff and volunteers
  • Identify and manage potential risks to the organization, including financial, legal, and reputational risks

Requirements

What You Bring

The Interim CEO must be a skilled leader and have experience managing through organizational changes and complex political dynamics. Ideally, youll have experience working with nonprofit organizations, public and private funding sources, training and educational institutions, various community stakeholders and other public decision-making bodies. You will also have experience nurturing strategic local, state and federal government agency and elected official relationships.

Required Competencies and Characteristics

  • Education: A Bachelor's degree in business administration, nonprofit management, or a related field equivalent. A Master's degree in a relevant field, or direct experience equivalent, is preferred.
  • Leadership experience: Candidates should have a track record of successfully leading teams and managing complex operations. Candidates should also have strong sense of urgency and situational awareness and exceptional interpersonal skills. Experience as a senior manager or executive in a non-profit or business organization is preferred.
  • Communication skills: Candidates should have excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders, including staff, volunteers, funders, community partners, board members and elected officials.
  • Passion for the mission: Candidates should have a strong commitment to the organization's mission and values, with a desire to make a positive impact on the community.
  • Managerial skills: Candidates should have experience in policy and program development and implementation, personnel management, organization analysis, and budget and finance management. Candidates should also have strong organizational skills, high attention to detail to ensure accuracy, great problem solving and time management skills.
  • Physical requirements: Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards and to remain in a stationary position 75%-90% of the time. The ideal candidate must be able to complete all physical requirements of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.
