Cameron House offers a 6-week summer camp experience for elementary, middle, and high school students aimed to foster our learners academic performance and social and emotional health through facilitated classroom, outdoor activities/lessons, community service, and supervised recreation.

We immerse youth with a variety of integrated hands-on opportunities and direct experiences - in both classroom and real-world settings - that promote health and personal growth and development that aims to position them for success in their academic, vocational, and personal pursuits.

Through project-based and outdoor learning we develop our learners abilities for critical thinking, creative problem-solving, socialization, and perseverance. Most importantly, we foster curiosity and a passion for learning, service, and for building a healthy, shared community.

Job Description

Teams of Teachers design/plan daily lesson plans, implement positive, high-quality learning and activities, and evaluate content mastery for the learners assigned to them. Teachers collaborate with one another, communicate with parents, and coordinate with visiting artists and community members.

Teachers are responsible for the safety and security of our youth in their charge, at all times. In addition, the Teachers are responsible for ensuring that all space, equipment, training, supervision, Cameron House procedures, and practices are maintained.

Teachers are required to participate in scheduled trainings, including a week-long training; the preparation period before each day, as well as a post-camp evaluation.

Program Dates: June 5 - July 21, 2023 (Holidays: June 19th, July 3rd & 4th)

Weekly Schedule:

-June 5 - 9 Training/Planning Week, 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM and TBD

- June 12 - July 21, Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM - Program

-July 22 - 24 Saturday - Monday TBD for evaluations, clean-up, closing

-Additional hours for preparation and planning in May TBD

-Teachers will work 35 - 40 hours per week beginning June 5th


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

To perform this job successfully, list the essential duties that an individual must perform satisfactorily. Note that this is not intended to restrict the tasks that may be assigned.

  • Design six weeks of lessons outlining learner outcomes that tie to curriculum standards and perform evaluations of the summer camp program for a group of 10 - 30 similarly-aged learners that address their physical, social, emotional, and intellectual needs and equip them for success in the coming academic school year
  • Using a learner-centered approach, map out daily lesson plans, facilitate interactive, multi-modal lessons and activities in classroom and real-world settings that tie to learner outcomes and curriculum standards and foster inclusiveness and cultural competence
  • Assess, monitor and document learner progress. Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student's progress, behavior, and needs, while nurturing a supportive/encouraging role of parents/families
  • Ensure the safety and engagement of children through effective program design and execution, supervision/facilitation, use of space and equipment, sound judgment and risk management, and administering and documenting first aid.
  • Contribute to a community of practice by sharing ideas, knowledge, and resources, engaging in creative problem-solving and collaboration, participating in staff meetings, and supporting the success of the entire team, as well as exchange of information and observation regarding students needs.
  • Supervise and facilitate recess and lunchtime periods
  • Collect and share stories to support Cameron House

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree/combination of formal education and equivalent experience. Teaching credential/masters in relevant field, preferred.
  • 5-7 years of direct experience facilitating formal and informal teaching for elementary or middle school learners.
  • Demonstrated experience and practice in the student-centered and developmentally appropriate curriculum; thematic teaching, project-based, critical thinking, creative problem-solving, and cooperative learning.
  • Passion for youth development.
  • Effective classroom/outdoor group management skills.
  • Possess the social and emotional skills necessary to build rapport and positive relationships with people from all backgrounds, abilities, cultures, orientations, identities, and communities.
  • Effective workplace habits: effective communication, team, community of practice contributor, and customer service skills. Punctual, attention to work detail, reliable.
  • Commitment to equity, cultural competence/diversity and inclusion, and lifelong learning.
  • Flexibility, organization, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • A willingness to be coached and openness to feedback.
  • Satisfactory clearance of Department of Justice Livescan, Tuberculosis clearance, completion of Mandated Reporter Certification, and Sexual Harassment Prevention training before reporting to the classroom
  • CPR certification or completion of training shortly after job offer.
  • Demonstrate professionalism by timely submission of lesson plans and effective communication
  • Be willing to be observed by an outside agency
  • Maintain professional relationships and work cooperatively with the Cameron House community
  • Regular attendance and schedule adherence


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bilingual and Biliterate in Cantonese and/or Mandarin, a plus.
  • Experience working with students with disabilities.
  • Awareness of, sensitivity towards, and experience with the needs of first-generation Chinese immigrant families.
  • Working knowledge and practice with restorative justice philosophy and methods.
  • Worked with, or have lived experience as people of color, people whose first language is other than English, people from lower-income communities, people from immigrant communities, people who identify as gender non-conforming or non-binary, people who identify as LGBTQIA+, students with disabilities, and other groups that are impacted by the historic and current system of oppression.


Covid Measures: For the safety of all staff and participants in Cameron House, all Cameron House staff working on-site are required to be fully vaccinated (COVID-19) prior to the work start date. All Cameron House staff are required to be fully-masked while working on-site until further notice.

Computer Skills To perform this job successfully, an individual must have excellent computer skills and display proficiency in MS Suite (Word/Excel/Outlook), and Google Docs. The ability to learn new software or apps quickly.

Reasoning Ability The ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to regularly stand, sit, talk, walk, hear, taste, and smell; use of hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb and balance; stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee is occasionally required to run during play or respond to an emergency. Employees are frequently required to engage with children on the floor and at their eye level.
