Summary

Our mission is to provide compassionate consulting services to local, state, federal and industry clients, active in disaster response, recovery, and preparedness. We will be on time, on target, and on budget with the services aligned to the evolving threats and hazards facing our nation.

The Shelter Support Staff member will play a crucial role providing guidance, direct care, assistance, support and supervision for the residents we will serve.

Position Summary:

  • Compensation: $26.25/hour
  • Travel/Location: On-Site New York, NY

Requirements

Responsibilities:

  • Greet residents/guests into the shelter and provide arrival information.
  • Communicate necessary information to the shelter residents as they arise.
  • Assist and offer support to shelter guests such as and not limited to medical and legal assistance.
  • Assist with providing food, hygiene products, water, etc and assist with the coordination of laundry.
  • Communicate the available of community resources and aides.
  • Assist with reticketing, reconnection, travel assistance, and destination information.
  • Ability to maintain residents privacy by not providing any information about their stay or confirming any of the guests identification.
  • Ability to maintain and establish rapport with guests.
  • Provide services as needed for migrant sheltering including check-in, tours, rules and guidelines.
  • Assist in overseeing the day-to-day running of the shelter in assigned areas including supplies, meals and basic needs.
  • Report progress, updates, issues and concerns to appropriate stakeholders.
  • Ensure that all program policies and rules are implemented fairly and consistently.
  • Maintain guest arrivals list and other updated, accurate reporting in the database.
  • Request support, supplies, and equipment through designated channels.
  • Ensure proper shelter identification is worn when conducting shelter and operation work by all on-site.
  • Seek guidance from supervisor as necessary and appropriate.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and attitude.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Bilingual in (Spanish/English and able to read, write, and speak proficiently in both Spanish and English.
  • Ability to engage, embrace, and celebrate the culture, ethnic diversity, and community values.
  • Must be able and willing to perform well in a fast-paced environment and assist team in maintaining a collaborative, supportive workplace.
  • High degree of responsiveness and social awareness.
  • High degree of empathy and ability to maintain respectful relationships with guests.
  • Comfortability with quick pivots/adjustments in program processes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software, strong Excel skill is preferred.
  • Outstanding organization and ability to work independently in fast paced environment.

Experience/Education Required:

  • Bilingual in Spanish/English (or other language commonly spoken at the shelter) preferred.
  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent with one year of customer service experience or two years of customer service experience.
  • At least one-year experience working or volunteering in a shelter.

Experience/Education Preferred:

  • Bachelor's Degree in emergency management, human service or relevant field.
  • Experience in Emergency Management/Operations.

Expected Hours of Work

Schedule may vary and require work on evenings and weekends and dependability and punctuality are paramount.

Physical Requirements

  • May require sitting or standing for hours for a long period of time.
  • Mobility around client sites necessary.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds repetitively as needed.

Work Environment

  • On-site work at shelter location.
  • Work may require work in austere locations and various weather conditions.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Must pass drug screening, background check and reference check upon offer of employment.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States is required.
