Who We Are

The Greater Valley YMCA (GVYMCA or GVY) is a volunteer-led, nonprofit, community organization. The Y is committed to strengthening community by positively changing lives every day. At each of our branches, we concentrate our efforts in three areas: Healthy Living, Youth Development, and Social Responsibility. And we do so in a way that upholds the Ys traditional family values of Respect, Responsibility, Caring, and Honesty.

For over 100 years, the Y has made tangible differences in the communities of Allentown, Bethlehem, Catasauqua, Easton, Forks, Nazareth, those comprising the Slate Belt region and the Lehigh Valley as a whole. Founded as individual YMCAs as early as 1897, the following branches of the Greater Valley Y merged together between 2010 and 2015: the Nazareth YMCA, the Suburban North Family YMCA, the Family YMCA of Easton, Phillipsburg & Vicinity and the Bethlehem YMCA. In 2014, the Forks YMCA Education Center was established. The Slate Belt branch was opened in 2015. In January 2017, the Allentown YMCA joined the Greater Valley YMCA.

What We Are Looking For

We are looking for a dynamic individual that desires a role where they can make an impact on the future of children. The candidate for this position is a coach, mentor, and leader. The individual must have the ability to: work independently; strong classroom management, communication, relationship building, and problem-solving skills; ability to respond to emergency and safety situations. A commitment to excellence and high standards in implementing quality programming to support our program. You will understand and be familiar with current trends in education as well as the ability to support the social and emotional needs of the children in our programs.

To be able to accomplish the goals set forth in this job description, you will need to possess a will to succeed. "What can I do to advance the Y and help it become more successful?" should be the mindset. The heart of the position will be the ability to look past "what is" and to see "what can/should be." These ideas for new systems, procedures, etc. originate from all YMCA upper management leadership positions, therefore, an elevated level of self-motivation and innovation/creativity is required to be successful at this position.


A Day in the Life as a Senior Childcare Director

As a Senior Childcare Director, you will help the GVYMCA achieve its goals of fostering youth development and creating a safe environment for children to be successful. Working as the leader of a team, you will build relationships, solve problems, and create strong programs for elementary-aged children. You are a role model, coach, and mentor that creates a team of extraordinary individuals that will provide for the needs of the children in our care.


Responsibilities As a Senior Childcare Director

  • Manages, directs, and coordinates the childcare programs for assigned location(s). Ensures high-quality programs and establishes new program activities. Expands the program within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans
  • Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules, and directs personnel and volunteers as needed. Reviews and evaluates staff performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals
  • Develops, manages, and controls budgets related to the position. Ensures the program operates within budget and that program fees are collected
  • Assures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations as they relate to program areas, including ADA accommodations where appropriate. Ensures that YMCA program standards are met, and safety procedures followed.
  • Provides for the upkeep of assigned program facilities and equipment and ensures the physical environment supports healthy living
  • Develops and maintains relationships with state childcare licensing agencies, school administration, parent groups, and other organizations and agencies related to assigned programs. Responds to all agency, parent, and community inquiries and complaints in a timely manner
  • Assists in the marketing and distribution of program information
  • Compiles program statistics. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation in the program
  • Maintains proper records/department files
  • Organizes special events for parents
  • Provides staff leadership for annual fundraising campaign and committees as assigned
  • Performs other duties as assigned and in accordance with the planned Chart of Work and that which supports the branch and association initiatives.

Expected Hours Per Week

  • Full-time exempt


Pay Range

  • $55,000 - $58,000 per year

Where You Would Be Working

  • Greater Valley YMCA
  • Multi-Site Responsibilities in Lehigh and Northampton Counties (including Bethlehem and Allentown)

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in recreation, elementary education, or related field or equivalent preferred
  • One (1) year or more of related experience preferred, as a coordinator or supervisor of childcare programs
  • At least eighteen (18) years of age
  • A valid drivers license and ability to travel
  • Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas:
    • outdoor living
    • songs/music
    • drama
    • sports
    • aquatics
    • recreational games
    • etc.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community
  • Within ninety (90) days of hire must complete Child Abuse Prevention for Supervisory Staff; Working with Program Volunteers; CPR; First Aid; AED; Bloodborne Pathogens; Mandated Reporter and DHS Health and Safety
  • Fulfillment of state-specific hiring standards (if any) and completion of YMCA program-specific certifications
  • Understands the YMCA is a public accommodation committed to inclusion and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
  • Bi-lingual English/Spanish preferred, but not required

    • climb stairs, bend, stoop, kneel, twist, reach with hands, sit, stand for an extended period, climb ladders, walk, shovel snow, plow snow, lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, have finger dexterity, grasp, perform repetitive motions, talk, hear, and have visual acuity
    • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
    • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high
    • The work is performed both indoors and out
    • While performing the duties of this job the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time.
