What would you do as a Sterile Processing Technician?

The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for collecting, sterilizing, and packaging surgical instrumentation in a safe and efficient manner to help provide quality patient care. You can expect to regularly:

  • Gather all contaminated instruments and supplies and return to sterile processing;
  • Decontaminate all equipment and instruments using proper tools and cleaning agents;
  • Identify frequently used instruments and equipment and ensure those items are prioritized during sterile processing to meet surgical schedule requirements;
  • Assemble trays and package instruments and equipment properly;
  • Proof preference cards for accuracy for surgical procedures;
  • Monitor sterility dates of supplies;
  • Deliver items to the operating room as requested;
  • Ensure proper operation and perform general maintenance of sterilizer units and instruments daily and report any visible signs of malfunction;
  • Run biological and chemical tests of sterilization equipment daily and record results in appropriate log;
  • Perform cleaning and restocking of department surface areas, racks, case carts, shelves, storage cabinets and all storage area;
  • Assist with data collection, recordkeeping and any other clerical work related to the department;
  • Maintain regular attendance and punctuality to minimize impacts to staffing schedules;
  • Remain calm in high-stress environments.

Requirements


  • Certifications/Education
    • High School Diploma or GED;
  • Knowledge of
    • General, basic sterilization and cleaning techniques;
  • Experience
    • Reviewing work and checking for errors.

Preferred Qualifications - How can you set yourself apart from other applicants?

  • One year of sterile processing/instrument technician experience;
  • Completion of an Instrument Technician training program.


Note: This position provides direct patient care. This position requires the incumbent to obtain a current CPR certification within 30 days of hire.

This position operates in a clinical environment. Exposure to communicable diseases, biohazards, toxic substances, and similar conditions is possible.

Physical: The noise level is usually moderate to high. This position frequently operates sterilizers and other machinery.

Schedule: Typical operating hours are 6 am 6 pm. Shifts and schedule are up to manager discretion.
