Title: Battery Validation Engineer

Location: Onsite in Waukesha, Wisconsin

Long term contract

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Must have a strong working knowledge of lithium-ion battery testing and validation
  • Responsible for setup and operation of System, Module, and Battery Cell Test Labs
  • Conduct and participate in risk assessments, DFMEA and Design Reviews
  • Strong understanding of battery systems and BMS controls
  • Identify and work with external vendors to assist in validation and verification testing
  • Strong data analysis experience.
  • Ability to analyze raw data and create validation and test reports
  • Review battery data and perform failure and root cause analysis
  • Provide hands-on support for qualification testing of production battery modules and systems
  • Strong knowledge of compliance and battery standards including: UL1642, UL1973, UL9540, UL9540A and UN38.3
  • Other Responsibilities as Demonstrated by Candidate:

    • Build a knowledge base and contribute to the growth of Generac expertise for battery testing
    • Create and maintain relationships with business, engineering, and applications peers to understand battery testing needs
    • Mentor less experienced engineers with an emphasis on battery validation testing

    Basic Qualifications:

    • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
    • Minimum of 5 years of validation engineering experience, 3 years with lithium-ion batteries
    • Experience with testing and validating battery packs/subpacks & battery modules
    • Effectively communicate and work cross-functionally with all disciplines
    • Data Analysis experience with MATLAB or similar relevant tools
    • Proven ability to identify and solve complex engineering problems
    • Ability to travel domestically and internationally
    • Strong technical writing skills
    • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

    Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

    • Strong understanding of lithium-ion battery cell characteristics
    • Experience with Arbin, Maccor or similar battery testing systems is desired
    • Demonstrated ability to write scripts using higher level programming scripting languages such as python, C, C++ for automating test equipment
    • Familiarity with automated test station platforms such as LabVIEW
    • Understanding of CANbus/Modbus and familiarity with battery safety certification is a plus.
    • Knowledge of battery concepts including State-of-Charge (SOC), State-of-Health (SOC) and cell balancing
    • Highly organized with attention to detail

    Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear; and use hands to manipulate objects or controls. The employee is regularly required to stand and walk. On occasion the incumbent may be required to stoop, bend or reach above the shoulders. The employee must occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Specific conditions of this job are typical of frequent and continuous computer-based work requiring periods of sitting, close vision and ability to adjust focus. Occasional travel.
