Entry level position with on the job training, and Northwest Eye Surgeons can help you work toward certification as an ophthalmic assistant. We offer the American Academy of Ophthalmology Independent Study Course for Ophthalmic Medical Assisting. This program offers on-the-job training and allows you to gain experience in Ophthalmology while working alongside the eye care team.

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Open and close exam lanes and ensure all supplies are stocked.
  • Take and document patients' medical histories and prepare the patient for the doctor exam.
  • Measure visual acuity using appropriate tests, including near, distance, and pinhole vision.
  • Perform pupil evaluation, measure intraocular pressure. (Goldmann & TonoPen) perform manifest refractions and other testing as necessary.
  • Operate ophthalmic equipment, such as: Auto Refractor, Phoropter, Slit Lamp, topography, IOL master, Projectors, OCT, Visual Field.
  • Communicate patient flow with the team to keep the schedule running on time, maintain support for the physicians and work closely with the front office team.
  • Triage phone calls from patients and outside contacts, and complete all tasks in accordance with the standard of care for Ophthalmology and office policies.
  • Complete various documents and forms such as consent forms, work releases, insurance authorizations, lab paperwork, etc.
  • Maintain an awareness of the patients verbal and nonverbal communication when the doctor is providing instructions as it may necessitate the assistant to repeat information, and/or provide patient education materials for the patient to review at home.
  • Ensure the patient understands all instructions.
  • Maintain a clean and tidy work environment and waiting area for patients.
  • Work with multiple computer programs and office equipment such as scanners, faxes, google office suite, Nextech EMR, AdvancedMD practice management system.
  • Maintain ophthalmic instruments & equipment, keeping up with calibration & cleaning.
  • Maintain flexibility and perform other duties as required.



    An ideal candidate will be patient-focused with a love for the senior community.

Requirements

  • Minimum high school diploma.
  • 1-year experience as a medical assistant or patient services preferred
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Proficiency with computers, Microsoft Office products, G-Suite, Windows environment, and strong keyboarding skills.
  • Willing to help in all areas, have flexibility, and effectively work in a team environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication for exemplary customer service.
  • Professional appearance, strong interpersonal skills, and patient confidentiality.
  • Strong organization with attention to detail
