We are looking for a Process Engineering Technical Leader who will be responsible for leading the process engineering design development with engineering partners and the internal team for application in Maltas grid-scale Pumped Heat Energy Storage plant solutions. The scope includes creating and reviewing engineering documentation, developing the steady-state model, and leading plant design safety reviews. You will work closely with Maltas engineering partners, turbomachinery and heat exchanger OEM partners, and internal Technical Leads for system integration, controls, turbomachinery, and heat exchangers to manage the design and development of the overall plant design from the detailed design phase through installation and validation. The Process Engineering Technical Lead will report to the Director of Product and Design Development.

Proximity to Schenectady, NY, or Greater Boston area, MA a plus.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Lead the process design and development efforts all the way through installation, commissioning, and field validation
  • Responsibility for the technical accuracy of the steady-state simulation model
  • Lead process engineering package development (e.g. Heat and Material Balances, equipment specifications, Process Flow Diagrams, Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams, datasheets, etc.)
  • Conduct trade-off studies for continuous plant design improvements and cost optimization
  • Develop functional requirements in close collaboration with component and functional Subject Matter Experts
  • Support the controls team with core controls development and operation philosophy
  • Lead appropriate safety analysis reviews on the overall plant design at critical points of engineering design (e.g. PHA, LOPA, HAZID, HAZOP, FMEA, etc.)
  • Support defining the balance of plant engineering performance guarantees and performance evaluation process between Malta, the engineering partners, and equipment OEMs
  • Assist with the development of the plant commissioning and testing plan and support site commissioning activities
  • Apply creative and innovative solutions to reduce total installed cost and cycle time
  • Support commercial and business development teams for discussions with potential customers
  • Mentor and lead junior-level engineers on process engineering design and development

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in Engineering from an accredited College or University
  • Minimum of 10 years of process engineering experience
  • Deep understanding of thermodynamic cycles and experience with steady-state modeling tools like Ebsilon, AspenPlus, Thermoflex
  • Familiarity and/or experience with AutoCAD, or other P&ID drafting tools
  • Experience in large plant system design and operation, encompassing piping and tank design, pump selection, valve sizing and selection, and instrumentation and controls
  • Experience with leading various hazards and safety analysis methods, including but not limited to PHA, LOPA, HAZID, and HAZOP
  • Proven experience in driving projects from concept to successful completion
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, high-tech, high-profile start-up where decisions and progress must be made with imperfect information
  • Ability to interface effectively with engineering partners, OEMs, vendors, EPC, and external customers
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally for partner meetings, site visits, conferences, etc.

Preferred skills and background:

  • At least 5 years of experience in high-temperature (e.g. molten salt) and/or sub-zero-temperature (e.g. cryogenics) applications
  • Prior experience with equipment design, sizing and selection of heat exchangers, gas turbines, steam turbines, generators, cooling system, and accessory sub-systems
  • Familiarity with HTRI, PV Elite, COMPRESS, and AFT Fathom a plus
  • Familiarity and/or experience with Power or Process equipment design/development, commissioning, performance testing, and operation
  • Familiarity with electrical interconnection and industrial utility service
  • Understanding of system dynamics and transients and their effects on component sizing and performance
  • Experience with plant/system/sub-system level Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), SIL assessment, and reliability/availability modeling
  • Familiarity with codes and standards, such as ASME, API, NFPA, etc.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills (can synthesize complex, multi-dimensional information in compelling collateral for executive and technical teams)
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Very organized and detail-oriented
  • Deep passion for decarbonization of the global electricity grid
