The Edible Schoolyard Educator teaches garden and kitchen classes and is responsible for the maintenance of a year-round productive and educational organic garden at Laurel Dell Elementary. This is a part-time position working in-person, 24 hours a week, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday from 1pm-5:30pm and Wednesday from 11:30am-5:30pm. Minimum Requirements - Strong knowledge of edible education, both garden, and kitchen, or experience in agriculture and culinary arts
- Demonstrated ability to interact positively and effectively with a variety of constituents, including students, co-workers, parents, teachers, volunteers, and visitors
- Demonstrated ability to lead and work in collaborative environments
- Gardening experience
- Facilitation experience
- Mobility of arms to reach, dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate large and small objects
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods
- Ability to lift, push and/or pull objects (up to approximately 50 pounds)
- Ability to work outdoors in a physically demanding environment
- Ability to smell, taste, and feel to determine the quality of raw food products
Preferred - Bachelors degree ( or at least 3 years of relevant experience)
- Experience working with elementary school-aged students
- Experience in a culinary or kitchen setting
- Educational experience in related fields
Duties and Responsibilities - Phase I, this position will teach all garden classes. Guiding K- 5th-grade students through propagation, harvesting, cultivation, composting, greenhouse production, and maintenance of the garden
- Phase II, they will add responsibilities for teaching all kitchen classes. Teaches kitchen classes, guiding K- 5th grade students through the lesson and recipe execution and clean-up; maintains kitchen inventory
- Maintains a productive and educational organic garden per the standards of the Edible Schoolyard Kern County (ESYKC) Programs
- Maintains garden production as established by the program and capacity of the garden
- Collaborates with the ESYKC Curriculum Developer to deliver grade-appropriate garden skills, activities, and lessons
- Oversee soil fertility, garden planning, seed supply, irrigation, pest, and disease management
- Maintains garden records
- Remains familiar with both the curriculum and the current harvest in the garden, to ensure preparedness to teach the classes
- Remains informed about daily class schedule and lessons
- Plan and deliver Family and Community Programs, such as Annual Plant Sale, seasonal camps and other events.
- Attend school-wide functions as requested (i.e.: Open House, Family & Student Events, etc.)
- Oversight for program budget
