Distribution Planning Engineer


Location: Remote (Allentown, PA office location)

Duration: 6 months


Job Description

The Distribution Planning Engineer is responsible for distribution system load forecasting, capacity planning, project development and work plan prioritization to ensure safe, reliable, cost-effective, and responsive delivery of electric service to customers. The ideal candidate will be expected to apply sound and diversified knowledge of power distribution engineering principles and practices as well as make independent decisions concerning an assigned planning area. The Planning Engineer role has a focus on non-wire alternatives, battery energy storage systems, renewable energy, microgrids, and other emerging technologies projects impacting the distribution system. This includes analyzing and supporting the integration and implementation of non-traditional solutions for constraints on the distribution system, supporting non-wire projects involving the transmission system, as well as supporting resource planning and other special projects that help the company meet its sustainability goals. The candidate should have a strong technical background and be comfortable working in an agile, fast-paced, technical environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform distribution system power flow planning and studies for the interconnection of load, generation, and storage projects.
  • Conduct voltage optimization, batch analysis, hosting capacity, and two-way power flow analysis.
  • Perform a wide variety of system planning, modeling, analysis, and project-oriented engineering activities.
  • Model the distribution system using CYME and effectively evaluate the addition of DER to the system.
  • Assess and analyze proposed solutions associated with the integration of DER and system impact.
  • Develop design solutions and possible alternatives to mitigate identified assessment criteria violations.
  • Compile results from technical analysis to produce detailed, concise, analytical reports.
  • Interface with DER Voltage Management team, substation engineering, asset management, siting, environmental and permitting, operations, etc. for the determination of planning needs and proposed plans.
  • Conducts assessments and develops options to meet load and DER interconnections by identifying key technical issues and developing proposed and alternative solutions.
  • Development and support of company distribution and joint T&D projects, DER programs, PV programs, and non-wires alternatives planning methodologies.
  • Clearly and effectively communicates the results of analysis and action plans both verbally and in writing/Effective written and oral communications skills.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills.


Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in engineering disciplines with a minimum experience of 3 years of direct experience with DERs (interconnection, planning, operations, voltage management, programing, standards, and engineering)
  • DER standards including energy storage (battery), solar PV inverters and Power Systems experience.
  • Voltage optimization, Batch Analysis, hosting capacity, and power flow analysis
  • Support development of the DER Management program, such as voltage management, network communication, data mapping, process development, and system operations requirements to manage distributed energy resources. Experience in voltage management and DER reporting
  • Strong understanding of electrical engineering concepts such as DG, storage, reliability, load flow, flicker, stability, short circuit, voltage regulation, transients, power factor, losses, etc.
  • Strong technical understanding of the parameters and functions used in the operation of the power delivery system as well as power industry fundamentals, practices, and standards. Strong communication, interpersonal and presentation skills
  • Knowledge of CYME

Preferred

  • 5 or more years of direct experience with DERs (interconnection, planning, operations, voltage management, programing, standards, and engineering)
  • Masters degree in engineering discipline
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in Pennsylvania
  • Strong technical understanding of the parameters and functions used in the operation of the power delivery system as well as power industry fundamentals, practices, and standards
  • Hands on experience with DER equipment design and construction
  • IT and technology background
  • Working knowledge of IEEE 1547 and UL 1741
  • Knowledge of CYME, Arc GIS, Visio, Python and SQL
