Type of Employment: 40 hours per week.
Contract Terms: One (1) year base contract with four (4) options years.
Period of Performance: 01 October 2023 30 September 2028.
Estimate Pay: $22.81/hour comprised of $18.40/hour base plus $4.41/hour for benefits (Health/Welfare) *This is just an estimate and not the final pay rate.
Holidays: Twelve (12) paid holiday.
Paid Time Off: Up to 80 hours (2-weeks) of paid PTO during the first year.
Sick Leave:Up to 56 hours of paid sick leave during the first year.

Attire
The Dental Assistant must wear appropriate attire, to include scrubs that are dark blue, burgundy, or grey. Must wear scrub top (with no writing, patterns, or designs) and bottoms or polo shirt (with no writing, patterns, or designs) with scrub bottoms. No denim, no pastel colors, no red, no orange, no greens, no khaki and no black.
Work Schedule
The Dental Assistant normal work schedule will be Monday through Friday (except Federal Holidays) from 7:30AM to 4:00PM, with a 30-minute unpaid lunch period. Work will consist of an estimated 35 sessions per week (7 sessions per day) but not to exceed 35 sessions per week. One (1) session will equal one (1) hour.
Education and Experience
- Certification from an accredited dental assistant school or minimum (1) year experience in a dental setting as a dental assistant.
- Training must include dental radiology and radiology safety and must provide a license.
- Shall be certified in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in accordance with the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association

Summary of Services
The Dental Assistant must be knowledge of dental anatomy, related oral anatomy, technical methods and practices of dentistry, and the working characteristics of dental instruments and materials sufficient to make necessary preparations and provide chair side assistance to the dental staff. Must possess skill and dexterity in manipulating materials and instruments intra-orally to remove sutures, change dressings and perform radiographic work.
Description of Duties
- Obtains diagnostic quality periapical, occlusal, lateral, jaw, TMJ, and panographic radiographs.
- Correctly positions inmate and film, determines level of radiation intensity to minimize radiation exposure of inmates and processes and saves digital radiographs to inmates record.
- Maintains proper infection control procedures.
- Places and finishes dental restorations, including bases and liners. Assists Dental Officer in dental specialty sections: restorative, oral surgery, periodontics, prosthetics, and examinations.
- Retrieve inmates records and escorts inmates to proper dental specialty section; seats and prepares inmates for attending dental officer.
- Assists dental officer by preparing dental instruments, essential materials, and medications.
- Passes instruments, retracts tissues, irrigates oral cavity, and operates aspirator.
- Observes inmates responses and assists inmate for dismissal from dental clinic.
- Makes necessary entries on dental treatment records (both electronic (BEMR) and paper records.
- Prepares dental treatment room for the next inmate.
- Assists in the treatments of emergency cases with the dental officer.
- Provide dental health education.
- Assists with dental screening examination.
- Prepares inmate for periodontal surgery, performs dental and periodontal charting.
- Prepares places and removes packs.
- Places temporary fillings.
- Places and removes rubber dams.
- Maintains dental equipment, cleans and sterilizes instruments.
- Performs daily inspections of equipment and reports any defective equipment to the dental officer.
- Selects and applies medication in proper portion and anti-cariogenic agents to surface of teeth, applies medication prescribed by a dental officer to gingiva to promote healing.
- Fabricates and repairs dental prosthesis and appliances under supervision of dental officer.
- Uses Acrylic resin and porcelain as basic materials.
- Takes radiographs of patients using standard and digital dental radiographic, panelipse, cephalometric and transcranial equipment.
- Makes primary impressions and pours casts.
- Must wear proper PPE.
- Must follow BOP Policy and Procedures related to proper sterilization of equipment and attend centra education as directed by the chief dentist.
- Will only be onsite at FCI Edgefield when a dentist is present or if they have received permission from the Health Services Administrator or his designee.
