Description

Gryphon Scientific is seeking applicants for a Research Assistant (RA) position supporting tasks focused on life science, chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) defense, public health and safety, emerging infectious diseases, and homeland security. The RA will work with senior scientific staff to collect and curate data from published literature, policy documents, and other sources, conduct analysis, and summarize their findings in technical documents for diverse audiences. RAs may have the opportunity to learn and apply qualitative and quantitative analytical methods, and interface with diverse groups of scientific and public health experts. This position requires critical thinking, problem-solving, and strong communication skills to develop and implement innovative, collaborative, and sustainable solutions to challenging health and security problems. This RA primarily will support projects in Gryphons All-Hazards Preparedness and Response & CBRN Defense practice area but may have the opportunity to work on exciting projects in other practice areas. The Preparedness and Defense practice area focuses on characterization and mitigation of all-hazard risks to human and animal populations including health effects associated with weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), emerging infectious disease, and antimicrobial resistant pathogens. Additionally, this practice area includes projects which focus on critical infrastructure protection. (Note, you will not be involved in laboratory work; there is no lab on the premises.)

Duties:

  • Gain familiarity and understanding of topics including but not limited to CBRN defense, infectious diseases, global health security, biosecurity, emergency preparedness and response, and public health.
  • Collect and abstract information from peer-reviewed literature, policy documents, gray literature, and other sources for various analytic tasks.
  • Collaborate with team members (Principal Investigators, Project Managers, and senior research staff) to interpret research results and formulate next steps.
  • Draft sections of written products designed for both scientific and non-technical audiences. Examples of written products policy and scientific literature analysis.
  • Perform project-related logistics and support functions. Examples include note-taking during internal and external meetings and documentation of project materials.
  • Provide regular communication and status updates to project managers and team members and coordinate across multidisciplinary teams.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in a life or biomedical science discipline (Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Immunology, Biomedical Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Public Health, or a related field)
  • GPA 3.0 or higher (out of 4.0) during final two years of college
  • U.S. citizenship is required due to government client requirements

Required Skills

  • Experience or training in biological, biomedical, clinical, or translational science
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to write clearly and communicate scientific concepts
  • Ability to collect, organize, and interpret findings for qualitative or quantitative analysis
  • Accuracy and attention to detail in written and analytic products
  • Organizational skills and ability to follow processes and standard operating procedures
  • Ability to work independently and with multidisciplinary teams
  • Ability to communicate clearly and without errors both in writing (e.g., email correspondence, written products) and verbally (e.g., project team meetings)

Additional Skills and Experience

  • Experience or interest in applying computer programming skills to work in this subject area
  • Experience or interest in infectious disease modeling or infectious disease biology
