Position Summary

Manske Library is seeking a forward thinking and dynamic professional for the adult services department in the Farmers Branch Manske Library. This position is ideal for someone who genuinely enjoys working with adults and has a passion for promoting adult literacy.

The Library Associate 3 role is the senior role in the Library Associate job family. This position is primarily responsible for planning and presenting innovative programs, services, and collection development, providing reference and advisory services to all ages. This is a highly visible and accountable line-of-work that will also involve assisting the Circulation and Reference Desks as needed, including computer assistance to all patrons. Under direct supervision of the Assistant Director, this position performs a variety of technical and paraprofessional duties. Applicants must be willing to work scheduled shifts which include some Saturdays and evenings: additionally, some Sundays may be requested.

Responsibilities:

An individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily.

  • Develop programs for adults in partnership with the Adult Services Librarian
  • Assist in planning and coordinating the librarys fast-paced and active summer reading program, both virtually and in-person
  • Perform any programs or events in front of a camera as needed or required
  • Perform collection development activities to maintain and improve the collection
  • Organize, shelve, weed, and display print and AV materials in the Adult areas
  • Create displays and flyers to advertise and promote programs
  • Maintain electronic resource collection, included, but not limited to: accessing usage, promoting resources, researching databases, corresponding with vendors, troubleshooting databases issues, and fixing broken links
  • Work service desks, primarily the Reference Desk. This position will be cross trained on all desks and will also work other desks as needed
  • Assist patrons in locating materials
  • Perform outreach activities to local organizations and city events
  • Supervise adult volunteers as needed
  • Apply for grants or other opportunities to benefit the adult department
  • Know and understand the American Library Associations Library Bill of Rights, Freedom to Read Statement and Freedom to View Statement, recognizing that freedom of access is a fundamental tenet of a public library. In addition to these freedoms, support client discretion of materials available at your local library
  • Follow all legal and policy requirements related to patron privacy and custodianship of patron records

Requirements

Qualifications:

An individual should possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed and meet the amount of education, training and/or work experience required.

  • H.S. Diploma or GED required; Bachelors degree preferred
  • Three years library experience preferred with an emphasis on adult services
  • One year supervisory experience preferred
  • Proficiency with library systems and databases
  • Excellent communications skills, both written and verbal
  • Multilingual speaking is a plus
  • A high degree of proficiency in MS Office suite including Excel, Word and PowerPoint is desired
  • Must be able to frequently move from place to place within the location; file and retrieve books and other items on high shelves; lift, push/pull, hold/carry of items weighing up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 35 pounds. of heavy boxes, books, and equipment; work in confined spaces; walk; bend; stoop; reach; and climb.
  • Willingness to learn new and innovative technologies
  • Recognition of the need for discretion in dealing with the public and making statements to patrons
  • Desire to serve the public and to learn customer-service-skills
  • Library experience and knowledge of library systems and databases preferred, but not required
  • Responsible to assistant staff where needed to achieve overall efficiency of the library environment
  • Ability to work within a flexible environment

Physical Requirements:

Ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork.
